Scaling 1080p Windowed mode to 4k, playing on a 4k monitor
I've spent hours googling this, can't find anything...... Really hoping for some assistance.

I want to play borderless windowed mode in 1080p on my 4k monitor, but it scrunches the game window up into 1/4 of the screen because it isn't scaling the 1080p image to fit the entire screen.

I know it's possible to scale a borderless windowed Skyrim in 1080p to fit 4k because the mod Enderal does it perfectly fine. Yes, I said borderless windowed, Enderal does indeed run in borderless windowed mode, and yes it runs in 1080p by default, and yes it does scale to fit the entire 4k display. (Talking about Enderal in this previous sentence..... can't be too clear sometimes.) If you aren't familiar with it, note that Enderal is an entirely separate game installation than Skyrim and launches independently in Steam, but it's still the same game engine using the same configuration files for its display resolution.

I've tried modifying the skyrimprefs ini in both the Users/documents and steamapps folders to both windowed and fullscreen ----- Even setting it to fullscreen just squishes the game window up to the corner. I was able to change it to 1920x1080 just fine.

I want to play in 1080p to save FPS with my mods. Again, Enderal defaults to 1080p and scales to 4k automatically, so it's got to be a setting that I'm missing.

If I didn't shave my head I'd be bald from pulling my hair out. Would anyone have some kind of idea what to change?

I'm sure someone will have some idea. Be it right or wrong.

I'm not.

Wrong, that is.

Keep in mind that I don't use these mods.

SSE Display Tweaks[www.nexusmods.com]- among other features, it can do borderless upscaling.
unofficial performance optimized textures[www.nexusmods.com]- this will also help
Skyrim Project Optimization SE[www.nexusmods.com]- occlusion culling, recommended for performance
AMD FSR for Skyrim[www.nexusmods.com]- I doubt this works. Give it a try and tell us if it does.

Are you using a Nvidia GPU?

In Nvidia control panel under the display section is "Adjust Desktop size and position".

Here you can set scaling modes and also there is a tick box to override scaling modes set by games and programs.

Not used this specifically for Skyrim, but I have had to use it before for other older games that would not play nice and refused to scale to my 1440p screen at lower resolutions.

@matt Sweet baby bajeezus the SSE Display Tweaks worked. I did the thing to scale borderless windowed to fullscreen. Now I've got that sweet 60+ FPS with all my ENB settings and high res texture mods. it doesn't look as good as it could if I had a 30xx GPU and could run in 4k, but it's definitely serviceable.

Bruh, thank you so much!

You might want to look for something that will give you better image quality than a basic upscaling algorithm, but it's good to know that works.
