In the original game, you actually couldn't kill him. His health would reduce to 0 and he would just look at you. You'd be like "okay, that's done....see ya around...."

I'm not sure if this was corrected in un-modded SE. I use either "The Paarthurnax Dilemma" or "Paarthurnax - Quest Expansion" mods.

There is no choice to make.
You let him live.
Killing him is to invoke the wrath of Sithis.

Actually you get to kill him in all versions, the Blades tell you to do so, if you do so the greybeards will shun you forever.

The main reason those mods were made was to not kill him and stay in the good graces of the Blades.

Yep I use those mods I will not kill him, however when I'm done with it I let the blades rot in their temple for the audacity to order me to kill him

With the mod "The Paarthurnax Dilemma" you can tell the Blades to go *#%! themselves, and that you are the one calling the shots, not them. It really doesn't matter anyway. The Blades aren't critical to the main quest anyway. All that will happen with them if you DID kill Paarthurnax would be that they would "allow" you to recruit new Blades for them. Woopee. :steamfacepalm:

You can recruit new blades for them before they ask you to kill Paarthurnax

Yes, but my point was, that not killing Paarthurnax will stop them talking to you at all. They say until you kill him, they won't help you anymore.
