That's why anything that's only textures/meshes is ok; ESP = bad (unless it's updated)
Just a heads up
But remeber, there are stuff in ESP or ESM files, so even unpacking BSA is not enough to get i work. SMIM works with older Skyrim version but there were clithes and some of those needed ESP FIX (Water Flow). It may have same thing that mod you try use.
And SMIM is back Loose file

Not all mods that have choices are .bsa at all. i guess your talking about fomod install, which is just a xml doc. for example SMIM for the standard skyrim has fomod and is also loose
and thinking about it now, most mods that use fomod are loose
