SKSE & SkyUI not working
I started playing Skyrim again, and I found that SkyUI had stopped working. So, I reinstalled it. However, it wouldn't activate, I'd go look in the load order in Skyrim SE and It would be deactive. I re-actived, then went to go play. Nothing bad but it crashes sometimes when fast traveling / entering or leaving an area. I also noted that SkyUI's Mod Customization thing wasn't appearing, and it looked like normal, vanilla, skyrim UI. Nothing changed.

So, I went, and got LOOT. It rearranged my mod order a lil, but nothing drastic. I noticed that it didn't have a # or something next to it like the others. It notified me that my SKSE was not up to date, so I go and update it. I try and open the game, and it opens for a second then closes. So, I go and re-do it, thinking I did something wrong, making sure I have every step right (I ended up doing it a third time). Still doesn't work. (2.0.19 SKSE SE)

I have no idea whats going on, and I've been trying to fix it for two days. I downloaded SkyUI with Vortex. I can open Skyrim through steam just fine. Here is my load order. I use Windows 10. There are some de-activated mods in here as well, so don't worry about those. The only one I'm worried about is "SkyUI", which is also deactivated for some reason.

Updated Load Order (2/20):
# Automatically generated by Vortex
SkyUI_SE.esp
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch.esp
Alternate Start - Live Another Life.esp
Skyrim.esm
Update.esm
Dawnguard.esm
HearthFires.esm
Dragonborn.esm
crand.esp ((I have no idea what this is, it wont let me delete it, so I deactived it)).

FAQ:

- Do you have SKSE?
Yes, and I do open it through there.

- Is your anti-virus blocking it?
No.

- What are you using to install mods?
Vortex, and only using Mod Manager Install.

- Do you have skyrim in Program Files?
No, I have it in a (Z:) drive, so its separate.

- Did you verify your files?
Yes, and I did do a fresh re-install, as well as deleting most of my mods. I only added any to make debugging easier / or hopefully help SkyUI Load (ie. Skyrim Patch and Papyrus).

EDIT: Hey!! Upon installing Address Library for SKSE Plugins - All in one & PapyrusUtil - Scripting Utility functions, it started working!! Thanks to all who tried to help me.

You may have a mod that relies on SKSE64 that needs updating.
This Guide will show you how to tell if this is true.

But I'd first reinstall SKSE64. IF you use Vortex as a mod manager Vortex will install the entire SKSE64 mod for you. I'd first watch the Video by Gopher included in the Guide as well. Otherwise if not using Vortex there are other tutorials included in the Guide as well.

If I am misunderstanding I apologize. IF you are using the in game mod manager to activate SkyUI then I recommend activating via the plugins.txt file. It should be located in your AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition.

*SkyUI_SE.esp

Mine is just after the .esm entries. If the Entry already exists. Ensure the Asterix * is left of the S in SkyUI (Incase you have wordwrap on).

If you haven't played for awhile then maybe you've missed one or more skyrim se updates. SkyUI needs SKSE. SKSE is bound to a specific SSE version.

I am not just relying on in-game mod manager. I normally used Vortex and I also downloaded LOOT to check on it as well. I just went to see what was up in the in-game mod manager, as sometimes it makes me active mods through there, which I hate doing.

It would have downloaded automatically, so thats not the case. I also have SKSE, it just started messing up on me for whatever reason.

I looked at it, and Gopher's video doesn't help. The Script Extender thing he was talking about was already enabled, and I'm not getting any notifications that its not installed. It even says SKSE is installed in LOOT. Also, I haven't gotten ANY problems with any of my other mods /until/ I tried installing SkyUI. So, I really doubt its any other mods causing these problems :/ . When I dragged put it in Vortex, then went to try opening it via skse_loader, it didn't work.

I understand that SKSE64 is installed but sometimes you need to make sure it's installed properly and Vortex does just that.

Also, as easy as SKYUI is to install I just had a guy last week who looked at this next guide, in the SKYUI section and he watched the video by GamerPoets on installing SKYUI and he told me reinstalling SKY UI fixed his problem.

This whole "my game suddenly won't launch" has been happening more lately than I usually see, and that, according to your post is what is happening now. Make me think it sometimes, in some cases has something to do with a Windows Update, like I said "sometimes". Seems to be a different fix each time.

Btw, did you verify the integrity of your game files thru Steam?

also check the SKYUI section here:

I did verify them! I also went and made sure every single mod was updated, which changed my load order a bit, if that matters:

I was looking at the guide, and went to look at my plugins like it suggested, however, I'm confused about a few of them.

DVAlaSS.dll (I deactivated this)
EngineFixes.dll
hdtSMP64.dll
PapyrusUtil.dll
SchlongsOfSkyrim.dll
SexlabUtil.dll
skee64.dll

Does it mean I have to delete/deactive /all/ of these mods, even after updating those that needed it? It said on the guide that anything in plugins will make SKSE not launch, and yeah, I did update my windows recently, a bit before I started playing Skyrim again. Although, I didn't get any issues until I tried updating SKSE and SkyUI (I had it previously, it was just acting up).

SKSE still won't properly open up..but it actually opens the command box now, and it attempts to open skyrim, but it closes right away. Still unsure about how to fix it.

Maybe I should downgrade SKSE, I'll have to re-check, but I think at least a few of them arn't up to date w/ the current SKSE.

This made me think of issues I had when I first upgraded to Windows 10 a few months ago.

Windows 10? Attempt to start it via SKSE64. Wait for it to do what it does.

Now
Go to Settings - Virus and Threat protection - Current Threats

Right under scan options there should be a link to Allowed Threats. In there; there should be a link to Protection History (sorry if this was the long way, I cannot find my way around Windows 10 to save my life)

Check if an entry was generated for when you just tried to run skse64. Might be a protected folder entry.

Yes and there are also sections in the guide that lead to my SSE Help Guide that gives detailed instructions for AV Initial Problems

You know not too long ago, after a windows update I was having a ton of "protected folder" issues with fallout 4. I finally just reinstalled all my games from "c:\windows\..." to a folder I named "c:\steam" off the root of c:.

Pain reinstalling my stuff, but no problems since.

Nothing there :(

Most if not all of my games are in a different hard drive, (which includes Skyrim SE). I doubt this would apply since its an external hard drive. (Z:)

I'm a bit dumb when it comes to fixing games, and I tried de-activing all the mods listed in Plugins, and nothing changed. I have no idea whats going on. I think I'll have resort to completely uninstalling everything, and only downloading the main mods I wanted before going onto decorative mods that I liked.

I'll post when that's done, which probably will fix my problem.
meowtaindew Feb 19, 2021 @ 9:54pm
I tried just downloading four mods (SKSE, SkyUI, then Alternate Start - Live Another life and its requirement Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch, so I can debug easily).

Everything is fine, except SkyUI is still not working, and I downloaded everything through Vortex. Legit have no idea whats going on.

It might be a stupid question, but are you launching the game with the SKSE launcher?

That's never a daft question...... too often that's the solution.

Yes, I am :/// . SKSE Is working perfectly, and I'm opening it from going directly into the files and opening the loader (and yes, I've tried running it as an admin as well). Its doing the same thing It did before, It says its in via Mod Loader (I don't like to use it, I only check if its a mod is acting up), and It'll be unchecked. I'll check it, go and start a game, and It acts like its not there (ie. no Mod Customization thing, or updated UI).

I'd like to post that my SkyUI started working!! Installing Address Library for SKSE Plugins - All in one & PapyrusUtil - Scripting Utility functions made it work for some reason. Thanks all who tried to help.
