Stolen Soul Gem Tags Follow My Character Forever
I tried having numerous different followers retrieve soul gems with the stolen tag on them from various containers and locations. And nothing works. The follower-trade method doesn't work for my stolen soul gems that are inconveniently mixed in with all my un-stolen ones in large stacks.

For example:
When I look at the item in the follower's inventory the stolen tag for a common soul gem that I tasked them to retrieve is gone however as soon as I trade with the follower and get the soul gem back into my inventory then the stolen tag reappears. What-the-ham-sammich...

Is this something Bethesda "fixed" for the Special Edition?

USSEP fixed it.

Also why care about it?

I am playing vanilla SE. I wonder if I would have to start a whole new game after installing USSEP... that would suck.

I care only because I have so many stolen items in stacks. The chonky inventory system doesn't separate stolen from regular items. It lumps them all together.

For example. I have a pile of 56 common soul gems. Which ones are stolen and How exactly would you propose to find and remove the stolen ones?

Ah well.

Put the lot in a container. Take out one at a time. If it doesn't have the stolen tag, store it in another container. Eventually you will find the stolen one.

Sell the lot to a fence and view it as a learning experience.

Toss them in a drawer and forget about them. You will get more soon enough. Go do a quest in a dwemer ruin if you need more in a hurry.

edit: get arrested and do jail time. When you get out, the guards will have confiscated stolen items.

You do not need to start a new game when installing the Unofficial Patch. In fact, unless it is specifically stated that a new game is needed, any mod can be added during the course of your [playthrouhg (it is removing mods that you cannot do - unless they are pure texture/mesh mods or mods only using vanilla assets or spawns).

Once the stolen one(s) is identified, drop it on the floor, open console, target it and then setownership. Use very sparingly. Can also setownership on a container full of stolen gear and hey, no longer stolen. But again, use sparingly.

And in future games don't go around stealing everything in sight unless you belong to a legit Thieves' Guild and have fences available. Non-thieves should not steal or else the TG will come and cut off your hands.

Thx fellas - I *may* download & install the UESSP - if there are more nuisances that befugger my fun play time. So far just minor quibbles - although the fast travel lo-res textures are ugly, annoying, and are happening more frequently when I go to Whiterun.

--> That's just it: I'm playing a stealthy, skeezy thief-ranger-assassin. Yup, also a member of those factions too. I noticed Radiant hasn't sent assassins after me since joining the Dark Brotherhood - but maybe that's just coincidence.

What i meant is that USSEP fixed the bug where sometimes you could remove the stolen tag. Not that it makes it so you can remove it.

But why does it bother you so much?

Because I have stacks of items that have stolen stuff mixed in the middle somewhere as I said. It is cumbersome and tedious to separate the stolen from normal items. Inventory management is not a strong point of Skyrim.

But you dont need to sort them out? Stolen stuff is on the top of the pile in the inventory if you are gona move them around anyway. And you can not sell stolen stuff to vendors that are not fences so they wont even show up there. And soulgems are used by you anyway.

Not true. I have found stolen items in the middle of stacks (i.e. remove a few normal items 1-at-a-time to find a stolen one).

I'm fine with just selling to fences -- provided I can actually locate my stolen items.

For some reason the vanilla game won't recognize stolen filled soul gems when you try to charge depleted weapons.

Oh, well that is a gamechanger then. Yea get USSEP that should fix the problem with charging weapons atleast. But i dont think you can make stolen items un-stolen anymore.

or alternatively hit a guard pay your bounty and they'll remove stolen goods for you.
