Did Maven Black Briar make an attempt on Jarl Laila's life?

While I was speaking to Laila's housecarl, something suddenly came to mind... Did Maven hire the Dark Brotherhood to kill Laila? No idea why she would as Harrald would inherit the Jarldom of Riften, but the thought is stuck in my mind. Snow Shod mentions that there have been attempts on Laila's life, whereas Maven's house shows proof that she hired the Dark Brotherhood, who failed to carry out the job. It's just a theory, but I thought it'd be harmless to post it here.

She is too useful an idiot for Maven to want to dispose of for any reason. She would have to start bending the mind of a new Jarl which might not prove as pliable as hers is.

As FauxFurry says, she isn't going to replace a pliable Jarl with one who might not be as convenient....

If Maven was going to kill Laila she would first kill all of Laila's heirs.... which would of course make Laila suspicious and more questioning, and likely backfire of Maven and her family....

I expect even in TES games they have heard of "Don't fix what isn't broken", I suspect that even if you do the civil war and put Maven in the Jarl's throne she would prefer the days when she was the power behind the throne... much more quiet and you can get stuff done while the Jarl is having to do the tedious crap...

I can think of two different possibilities.
Possibility A: Maven hires the DB to do a different job, and it just so happens that an attempt at Jarl Laila's life is made at the same time. Pure coincidence.
Possibility B: Maven Hires the DB to FAKE an attempt at Jarl Laila's life, as part of a false-flag operation with the goal of focusing Laila's attention somewhere else.
