Bounty for a murder I did not commit
Just started the game. Walked towards whitehall to speak to the jarl and all the guards charged me down. After checking the menu, I have a bounty of 1000 for a murder I have not done. What's going on here dudes?

Yeah man, I hear ya. Dudes are always accusing me of stuff I didn't do. It's all a conspiracy to keep the Imperial Prison Industrial Complex in business.

Fight the Power, man!

I don't think it would be the Thieves Guild. Those guys are cool. They always buy the stolen goods that I find just laying on the ground whenever I'm walking around.

It's the cops, man. They're all crooked. Alex Jones had a bunch of videos about this.

Deny it all you want, we have a chicken that saw you commit murder.

Magistrate: Now, can you tell the court what you saw?
Chicken: Cluck cluck bawk becaw!
*shocked gasps from gallery members*
Jarl Balgruuf: I've heard enough! By my right as Jarl, for your crimes against Skyrim and her people, I hereby sentence you to death! May the divines have mercy on your soul.
Dovahkiin: What in Oblivion just happened? And what are you going to do about the dragon?
Jarl Balgruuf: Fine. I'll dispatch guards to Riverwood. I'm certain we can handle this beast on our own. We don't need some bloodthirsty wanderer who causes nothing but trouble. Guards, take him away to be executed. Proventus, show in our visitor. What was his name? Durak?

---Usually it's because we or our follower accidently attack/kiil a guard while we're fighting with enemies. Think carefully if that happen.
---If we cast fire rune or any spell that an "unfortately" guard have step on it or got kill, it's a crime.
(I always like to play with the fire rune and ....:steamfacepalm:)
---If a guard saw you transform to a werewolf.
Ok, If you can find them, You can join the A-TEAM.

Skyrim was fine until the Dovahkiin came along. It's the dang Dovahkiin the Imperials want.

Off with his head.

I'm still not sure what happened, but when i returned i was put in prison, and when i left i still had all my gear. Problem solved, but I still claim I did nothing!

Now that was being Imprisoned (and nearly executed) for a crime you did not commit.
Crossing a border is not a crime, not according to Imperial Law, if you had been a merchant with some goods, they could fine you for not paying the taxes, plus obviously charging you the Taxes, but that's about all.

btw unless you join the thieves guild and dark broother hood certain event will ocur
if you wait to long.
thief guild will steal stuff and will rob you anywhere.
dark broother hood tends to send you assasdins upon you if you do not join them.

one more thing check inventory for stolen marked items .
check at pickup allways so it says take and not steal
if you open chest check so it says take and not steal.

allways check in general crime stats if you have a current bounty to any hold!
all amount of bounty is shown there!

stealing is only useful if you join the thief guild at the start
or you get speechcraft high enough to make all merchents to fences.

during quest and defence its enough that you hurt a friendly npc to get and receive a bounty, it counts as a crime!

stealing, stealing while not in stealth and or seen , lockpick while not in stealth and or seen, pickpocketing while not in stealth and or seen/caught, hurting friendly npc (exception a friendly brawl)

all that counts as crime and will be punished.

Assuming you went straight to Whiterun after Helgen and did not stop anywhere or do anything (maybe talk to whoever in Riverwood like the quests say), then it's possible you bumped into an Imperial while he was firing arrows at Alduin in Helgen. Since everyone there dies, you were the last one to touch a dead person, which means you're the killer.
