It apparently sets neutral NPCs to either your friend or ally, meaning it will take a few accidental hits to turn them aggressive. The page also has a link to a companion mod that disables the ability to damage non-aggressive NPCs entirely (and allows you to re-enable that ability if needed for a quest).
This is a rather unique problem for an rpg to have since other games can get around beating the 'frendlies' over the head trope.
It seems setting all npcs to a higher pain threshold is preferable when they can take a few hits without stabbing me in the ribs.
As per parry system, I'm currently lvl 15 and I'm still massively changing tactics and figuring out how to combat properly.
The deflecting blows system in making me scratch my head. I play a destruction mage who is severely missing a simple dodge action and am eternally mystified by its absence.
I'm doing the companions and winter college quests to have 1h shield and 1h offensive spell at my disposal if I'm getting a high sprint enemy or can't really get out of the range in a twisted dungeon passages. I'm seeing magic stuns higher up the tree, but the skill level needs to be massively higher and I need to live through the levels to it first.
I like Solsteim so I like to go there even if I'm not in a hurry to finish the Greybeard / Blade stuff right away. And instead of having to buy a house they GIVE you one and it becomes my crafting base.
If playing a mage like your case, if I used a follower I would prefer an archer. One like Lydia just runs forward and is in your way of doing damage. Same thinking I NEVER use a caster follower. Unless one mostly used conjuring stuff. I'm sad that potential followers that can eventually have 100 Restoration do not bother to even heal themselves. Tried one 1 time hoping for a more support type follower. But they will never heal you either nor cast things like Rally. I give them a torch because I have never even seen one with Alteration use Candlelight nor Magelight.
You dont even need to do that, travel to Solsteim instead direct.
As per companion, the very first one I've recruited was Faendal. I've kept him around for the exact reason you've mentioned, he's an archer and I didn't want his ass in the way of my fire booms.
I'm actually rather happy with him at present and even got a good story to tell.
I was suppose to retrieve a sword called Nettlebane from some kind of Hag. Obviously, ventured into new area. So, I'm looking at the map wandering hmzzz where should I go when KABOOOM!!! A rain of lightening starts showering me from an unknown direction. When I figured out it's coming from a hill, plus dying a couple of times, I figured a direct assault on the enemy who spots me twenty miles away and has higher ground to throw magic from before I see them, is not working.
So, I started sneaking around the base of the hill, using rocks and trees for cover, and drawing out the hag's lackeys to wack them over the head with a mace. All the while the hag kept raining magic on me. So, I'm running around in mayhem, wandering how I can get atop of the hill without becoming BBQ.
When suddenly.... the lightening stops...
Cautiously, I climb the hill and spot a very dead Hag with one arrow sticking out of her head and two more out of her butt. And Faendal is standing beside her with his usually charming demeanour that says, have you showered with a skunk lately cause your combat stinks. I'm pretty sure he looked smug that one time though. :D
