Best mods for combat, skill trees, gear?
I haven’t played this game in forever, and I never used mods. Ignoring mods that improve the visuals, what are the best/most-popular mods for improving things like the first person combat, the skill trees, and gear?

If there’s one magic mod that improves all of it well enough, that’s great too. I realize it’s kind of a big question, any help is appreciated.

As you are playing original Skyrim and not SSE (as seen on your profile for hours played), you should post this in the original Skyrim forum to ensure that you get the answers appropriate to your game and to avoid confusion:

"Ordinator" is a great mod that doesn't change much of the actual combat, but gives really nice perks to spice things up. It changes every skill tree to allow for a lot more playstyles.

"Wildcat" to start off with melee combat overhauls. Includes timed blocking, better ai combatants, and new moves for them.

"Archery Gameplay Overhaul" for ranged overhaul. Bleed from arrows until you remove them from your body, "enchantable" arrows, new bow animation.

"Apocalypse Spells" for all of your magic casting needs. Raise a wall, conjure an army of skeletons, change the weather.

Start with those mods and you'll eventually find more to suit your needs.

It's all good, I plan on purchasing the special edition.

Great! You will find that SSE is much more stable as compared to Oldrim. Would suggest you wait for the end of year Steam sale to see if SSE goes on sale again.

As for perks if Ordinator misses the mark try Vokrii it's more in line with the vanilla perks: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/26176

You can get SE off instant gaming for 20$ I've never had any issues with that site.

As for combat mods I also highly recommend Ordinator and Apocolypse mentioned above.

Combat gameplay overhaul is really nice, among other things it gives you a grip switch 1h /2h switch on weapons and has a built in dual weild parry function for blocking when you've got a spell in one hand and weapon in the other. I use mmb, much better than having to switch to a shield.

Enhanced first person parry is another that's really important to me, mixes up the weapon block animations.

Ultimate combat and Ultimate dragons are all Im using right now for enhanced combat AI

Increased enemy spawns is a nice stable way to increase spawns without scripting.
