Glitched/Blurry textures in Whiterun, how to fix?
Upon finishing the quest where you find haelgas 3 marks of dibella for that waitress girl, I went to Whiterun to turn in Retreival companions quest. The games textures are totally glitched, not all of them mind you, but large swathes of the terrain and sides of houses. They are beyond blurry, there basically a single matte color, grey, with no detail at all.

Anyone know how to fix this? I run a few mods for high quality textures, but have tried disabling them and runnning the game clean, to no avail. Cant figure out what triggered this and how to eliminate the issue.

Ive tried restarting the game, reloading the area, loading previous saves, verifying integrity of game cache, updating graphics drivers and all the other first line fixes.

Have you played with the FOV ingame. I think my friend had a glitch like that but in a different location. He moved the fov slider in settings a little and I believe he said it helped...

Its the mods. reinstall them in your preferred order. Ive had this happen with SMIM. Simply uninstalling and reinstalling the mod fixes it.

Thank You! I was having the same problem and uninstalling SMIM fixed it.

I doubt it has anything to do with SMIM, I used to get it all the time and I never used mods. From what I have encountered from playing the game and what I've read on these forums over the years, its an engine bug and can't be fixed.

What happens is the LOD textures don't properly unload, and some LOD textures remain rather than the game using the correct hi-res textures. I usually get it via fast travel or going from an inside cell to the outside world, but for me its mostly fast travel. Arthmoor who does the unofficial patch has said its an engine bug quite a few times on the forums.

I removed the mods myself and it was worthless to fix it.

Barney is likely correct.

Save your game, exit, restart the game, load the file you saved

Just in case someone else decides to necro this thread, it has nothing to do with mods, it is the game engine. From another old thread:

Arthmoor:
"This is an old topic, but someone pointed me in its direction. This isn't an issue caused by any mod. It's an engine bug that's been in Bethesda's stuff since Oblivion. Occasionally the LOD simply doesn't unload and you see it overlaid on top of the regular things that should be there. Nothing can be done about it short of Bethesda patching the game to correct it.

As someone pointed out before, this even affects Fallout 4. Hopefully by the time TES VI rolls around we won't still be on this dodgy engine of theirs and problems like this will go away."

For me it actually happens much more often in Fallout 4 than Skyrim SE

I have found the solution, it is Engine Fixes that does it, but this feature is not enabled by default, which is the problem.

To fix the crash on load save bug or corrupted saves bug, you need to change setting "SaveGameMaxSize" in "EngineFixes.toml" file in the SKSE folder to "true".

No, as I posted in the other thread you necroed, it is exactly as I posted in my post #7, here. Engine Fixes and what it does, does not come into play at all.

Engine bug (SSE Eng. Fixes does not fix it) indeed although sometimes we help it "kick in" if you will. I personally have not noticed this issue in my SSE games but wskeever came out with a mod and although it does not fix the problem it's suppose to help in some instances where we induce the issue.

LOD Unloading Bug Fix
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/61251
does it work? I can't say but I did install the mod 3 days ago although I still need to test it.

Here's how this particular bug is described on the mod page:
"Description
You might sometimes encounter a bug where LOD (level of detail) objects don't unload, leading to ugly LODs up close. This happens if you launch the game, load a save in an exterior location and travel a certain distance. The distance at which this happens depends on your LOD ini settings. If you are on Ultra settings, loading into Solitude docks and immediately traveling to Whiterun will likely result in this."
(which I never do^)

Then there's this

None of this changes the fact that this is an engine bug.
