Can I play a sword and shield build on legendary?
Wanted to play legendary but didn't wanna play the typical stealth archer. If I play a sword and shield/paladin type character on legendary will I just die instantly?

no, you are not good enough

Unless you focus on the alchemy/enchanting+smithing cycle the answer is no. You need top end gear, the lord stone, a breton and the three alteration magic reduction perks. Once you have a sword dealing over 800 damage then you can melee. Before then rely on paralysis poisons.

I legendery that hard!? I cant remember if I even played legendery before or just master... I've had really powerful characters and stuff... but I cant remember now. I know I always played Master atleast.

I choose to play a caster this time around, an Orc, not played Orc much... but so far its been a pain in the b***... Takes ages to get powerful...so every fight is just you running out of magica unless you get some enchants real early that help you and and a real good robe at the start....

I've been spoiled with Fallout 4, after a while in that game you can level up and get to like level 100 in no time... but in Skyrim its abit slower and you really need to work hard to get strong in soome builds, sure, you can cheese stuff alot... but thats boring... ;P

I feel bad enough I've been fast traveling, I normally never do that ever... :(

On legendary you take 3x damage so anything wielding a 2h weapon will ohko you unless you have max damage reduction.

Use +% destruction potions and cost reduction enchantments.

is it the same case with a battlemage?

The trick on legendary is to not get hit. How you do that is up to you. If you have l33t twitch skills, no problem, but for ordinary mortals you should consider stealth or magic.

At the beginning it's hard. When you start getting some stamina and block skill it will be less. I started sword and shield in legendary and till now level 55 nothing beats me. Stock up on magic resistance, armor rating and potions and it won't be too hard.

Spellbreaker is absolute great. It makes dragons less of a pain. But it's really hard to beat the quest boss at lower levels. You need a 150-200 damage weapon to kill him 1vs1, or you can sneak attack him. The thing is that he heals himself all the time and teleports around.

My character has all attributes from level ups into stamina and health.

I use a 900 rating (though the cap is 567) Nordic heavy set (just because it looks fabolous) and a Dragonbone sword

Armor is enchanted towards restoration spell cost, health & stamina buffs, stamina regeneration. No one handed damage or I will one shot everything.

If there were classes it would be a Templar, like in ESO

You seriously? Shield and sword is very good build! Especialy at high difficulty. The awesome perks and abilities that you can unlock shield makes it more safe, tanky and quite aggresive with shield bashing to stun your enemy. How do you think I beat Karstag and Ebony warrior as warrior myself? And I didn't had overpowered enchatments or high damage on my sword.

With shield and sword the combat become more complicated and intresting compared to dual wield or spell and sword combat, since it require timing and experimence with shield and sword (axe or mace) to became very good at it.

800 damage? Are you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ serious? You need to be the weakest wus and suck at this game a lot to need that much damage (Even it is legendary difficulty)

Sword and Board on Legendary is difficult. I'm playing on Legendary as well, but as a Sneak Archer with a Bound Bow that also uses llusion so I can go invisible and stab people with a Dagger for 30x damage.

If you want to Sword and Board on Legendary I'd highly recommend investing heavily into your Hit Points, perhaps EVERY single level up, and getting a follower ASAP who can tank all your hits. Then you will need to dodge all attacks while flanking your enemy. It IS doable, but it's significantly more difficult than what i'm doing on Legendary. Especially, versus a Dragon who can also use their tail to swipe you. Save often, prepare to redo sections multiple times, and good luck!

I'm playing a pier cryomancer build and not having a lot of trouble. You should be fine.

Here is the builds I'm using http://theskyrimblog.ning.com/m/group/discussion?id=6452022%3ATopic%3A2149948

Destruction takes forever to level up, my 1h skill is higher and I barely use it... so annoying. Even my Alchemy is higher... and thats been a pain... I know you can cheese it quite a bit but have been lazy... My destruction level is at like 50 or 60 and I'm level 32 now, on Master... and I'm not nab here, I've played Skyrim for almost 1500 hours now... tried most "builds"! :)

Destruction get powerful when you have the gear and end game spells but until then its a pain in the behind.

I had a stealthy illusion character some time ago, that was too easy instead. As soon as sneak and illusion was sorted I was so OP... it was not even funny... :/ I did not even put any points in melee weapons even tho I primarily used a dagger, did not need it... :D no crazy enchants, nothing... just using those insane crit modifiers and stealth kills, and illusion magic 90% of the time. :D

You need to use a mod that makes shields function realistically, as means of deflecting a blow instead of magically slightly reducing damage. The whole point of using a shield in real life is to deflect attacks while you attack. But in Skyrim shields only slightly reduce the damage you take and you aren't allowed to attack while blocking with a shield, even though in real life you use a shield while attacking.

Dunno why everyone is saying no. Thats how I'm playing the game right now shield and heavy armor. The shield block isn't really strong at first it's mainly for shieldbashing to stagger enemies or stop an incomming 2h power attack. Dance in and out focussing on quick attacks saving your stamina for the shieldbash. eventually your armor and health will get high enough to play the traditional tankish warrior style.

No

Yes but unlike the other schools of destruction frost is the hardest school to dedicat your salf to in skyrim do to a lot of stuff being resistant to ice magic or immune.. all most everyone is a Nord with 50% resistance and vampires.... ice dragons... you have to play support a lot for your followers my Frost Atronach... I'm up for the challenge
