Suddenly extremely long save times
I initially thought my game was getting stuck on a black screen after going through doors, but it was actually that the game was taking an extraordinarily long time to save. My current game save size is roughly 17 MB, but the save times were usually a few seconds long at most. Now, I can see the save file size slowly crawling up over the course of 30 seconds to a minute, until it reaches about 3-4 MB and then suddenly jumps to 17.

Thing is, nothing has changed since this started happening. No mods were installed or removed, no settings were altered. Nothing. Moreover, it's retroactive. Even PREVIOUS save games have this issue if I make a new save after loading them.

My entire computer lags during all of this and my resource manager shows my disk usage skyrocket.

First go to the saves directory and move all except the last 2 files to a backup folder anywhere else. Then if it keeps happening start a new game and save. If it doesn't happen on a new game I can bet my money that sooner or later your playthrough will start making corrupt saves. Otherwise may be a mod.

Less likely is that your HDD is having issues or something in the background is using it more.

I found the issue to actually be caused by SKEE64.dll from RaceMenu. Removing the .dll allowed me to save instantly again. Luckily none of the changes I made with RaceMenu seem to be affected and, as far as I know, removing a SKSE plugin isn't quite as terrible as removing entire mods with scripts.

Your reply saved me, deleted the file and it went back to normal after having this issue for months, thank you!

Is it really safe to just delete SKEE64.dll? I'm kind of sick of having to wait like 30 seconds every time i save, but I don't want to break anything.

Edit: I yolo'd it, fixed my slow save problem instantly. Played the game for while to see if everything still functions and it does seem to be okay.

Marvellous, this worked a charm. Thanks

Although I would recommend just removing the SKEE64.dll file and then reinstalling racemenu. This fixes the problem, and still allows full functionality of racemenu

For me, I'm not using any mods, but I noticed fast travelling and entering buildings took noticeably longer than usual. So I checked my saves folder and deleted all the backups of my quicksave file. Don't know why the game would create so many backups which are all very outdated. After I did that, loading and saving was back to normal.

What I think may have worked for me was to delete the SKEE.dll file then load into Skyrim, make a new save, exit skyrim and then reinstall racemenu.

A million thanks! Started to take too long for mee too and this was the solution, I actually downloaded the mod from nexus and replaced the old dell with the one from there. I also believe that the issue started when I first opened a document called "captain's note" and it gave me an option to change my character, (I didn't change anything probably for the better)

its the year 2025 and i just saying this still works, thanks. i like to save scum and this help a lot
For a very long time I noticed my saves taking longer and I reckoned it was due to the saves all building up in the save file (like about 100). So what i would do is in the middle of a game, stop, go outside the game, find my save folder and delete ALL the saves, (after making a copy backup of course), then go back in the game and make a new save.

Did the job.
