Do the contents of your house respawn or reset?
Like if I took all the alchemy ingredients from the house in Riverwood, would they eventually respawn or would they be gone forever?
If I accidentally push stuff off but don't take them, will their positions reset?

There's this one glitchy raw rabbit haunch in Breezehome that constantly bounces off the plate it spawns on when I enter, and then respawns on the plate and re-bounces off when I reenter. Not entirely relevant to the question but I felt like mentioning it.

It depends on the house. If it's a house you purchase then for the most part the containers are safe to store in. If it's an NPC house then No, you can't trust them. As far as respawning materials / ingredients. Yes they will respawn under a few conditions... A) you have to wait until the game resets (31 days) and B) if you keep entering and leaving the house it won't resset because YOU keep resetting the clock.

There are a couple of unsafe safes in the player homes and Hearthfires homes as well. The safe in the bedroom respawns but isn't supposed to. And the safe in proudspire mansion in the bedroom has the same issues. There are mods that fix that.

For the most part you can trust mod added player homes as the community rakes them over to coals if your stuff isn't safe.

when you say the house in Riverwood? Which one? However, like Avrie said Player Home mods are safe for the reason stated so since Riverwood does not have a Vanilla Player Home the answer should be yes they are safe. I use Leaf rest for that very reason and there is very much storage in that home and it sorts it for you if you like.

But much depends on how far into the game you are as for example early on in the game you are strapped for storage.

This wiki page gives you some detail on all storage:

I meant it as in
Could I buy one of the houses, loot the stuff that's in it, leave it alone for some amount of time, then come back and loot it again? Or are the items in your houses finite and gone once you've removed them?

Nice thought but no because the items in a home that you purchase will not respawn.

ya really wish they had done this better, even if they didn't ruin manually moving things for some reason .. they last could have had this idk working fine at some point in a update (honestly should have been obvious way back when heartfire dlc came out at very least).

But hey did you see the creation club 103948928update of trash ? Now that is important Not to mention the lovely latest Failout 76 bugs :steamsad: ...

(post has already been answered so just putting in hopes and tiny lols at the company)

Bethesda always leaves that door open. You have to LOL so they don't upset you. Good thing it's only a game.

The homes you build with Hearthfire do have items that respawn. Front room, the snowberries tundra cotton or whatever and wines and maybe the book respawn.
In the dining room, the food, wine and book on the table respawn. I can't recall the garlic and elves ear etc. respawning in any home.

Upstairs, the Argoninan wine, squash, mammoth tusk, honey and snowberries respawn.
In the second bedroom, the food and book on the table respawn.

In the cellar the food in the corner near the altar respawns.

In the garden, one shelf has items including a giant's toe that respawns.

There's more, but I haven't built one of those homes out completely in a long time.
