That quest is bugged. I think there are some console commands that will get u past that stage.

The Number One reason people have trouble with this is improperly performing a Power Attack.

Other than that, it is likely mod related.

It's a false sense of how many people have an issue with the quest. For every one person who has an issue with this quest there are ten people who don't. And half of the people who have an issue have just managed to get lost (not sure how though).

Most common issue is the game engine has just glitched, and you need to load a save from before you entered Bloodskal barrow. Which is an engine issue, not a quest issue.
I have done this quest many times, on both versions, with different computers, and never had this problem. It's not a massively glitched quest no matter what your google search tells you.

Here's the console commands in case you need to get thru. Or just try the quest over again, I guess, from a previous save. But it isn't bugged at all. ;)

There are two spells (vertical/horizontal) and you can equip them with the player.equipspell console command.

for the horizontal spell type:
player.equipspell 0401AEAE left

for the vertical spell type:
player.equipspell 04033A27 left

I must have done a good 20 playthroughs, and never had an issue with the quest. Sure I had to figure out HOW to perform the sword moves to get the parts to move. It's FAR easier to put your character in third person to do this. There's a spinning move that doesn't show when your character is in First Person. It's just a matter of getting the moves to perform and being in the right spot to trigger them.

I'm assuming you're trying to use the blade for the first time to exit. I spent almost a week on that, convinced the pretty lights had something to do with it, totally overthinking this. I refused to look up the solution.
So here's what you do: Swing the blade while strafing with the A and D keys.

I can guarantee that the Power Attack with the spinning move was being done correctly in 3rd person. It looked exactly like numerous YouTube videos demonstrating how to do it, and with the correct mouse hold for an attack move with appropriate Stamina loss while strafing A/D. The bolt did not appear. Face it, the quest is bugged, and there are dozens of posts on the web admitting so. Nice that it worked for you, bit it doesn't in all cases.

There are dozens of posts saying it's bugged??
For a game with THOUSANDS of players.

No it doesn't work every time for everybody, but that is true for every single quest in the game.
Once again it's the game engine that's bugged not this specific quest.

I have no doubt that you did everything correctly, but it's Bethesda's engine that's the problem, and short of redoing the entire quest from a previous save nothing can fix it.

Ok, then, let's agree that the engine is bugged in a way that affects this quest. Deal? 😊

Sorry, but I disagree. I've done this quest at LEAST 20 times and only had a problem the first time, figuring out HOW to do the sword swings. And you HAVE to be standing in the right place when you do them. If you do the strafe (A & D Keys like ralphtobybob says) and you don't END UP in the proper spot to trigger the stone part to slide when the swing occurs, then it won't trigger. That was the mistake I made at first. You have to start further over so that your swing coincides with the part you want to activate. Positioning is the key.

Every time I do this quest, I get the same thing. It takes several tries to get it right. Nothing to do with the game engine....everything to do with HOW and WHEN you swing the sword.

A friend of mine was having the EXACT same problem you are having, and complained that the quest was "bugged". Once she figured out what she was doing wrong, it worked fine.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

I never had any issue with it either except the very first time, when it took me about 3 hours to figure out a Power Attack.

Oh, and for the record, take a look at the USSEP changelog version 4.1.17, which clearly lists a bug with the Bloodskall Blade:

im going to ignore any comments complaining about how people dont get this or dont get that , this is a discussion not a crying contest, anyways the quest isnt a probelm like i said i can pass the quest using the spell on each hand thing, the problem is it wont simply fire the beam :/ (yes i i know its by using power attacks i played skyrim on other platforms) and the first thing i did when i got skyrim, is i made a mod testing character and equipped the blade using console commands, i have no idea why!
