What armour should I put to Brelyna?
First playthrough, no mods, avoiding spoilers :D

Thanks!

You a smith? If so use the best stuff you can make. If not I’d just pick up stuff i find off of enemies, preferably mages since she is one too. If you’re desperate for levels you could enchant a bunch of stuff for her. That’d level you up real good.

Thanks! Low on smithing, high on enchanting. Does it matter if she wears light or heavy? I was thinking of heavy for best protection, its what Im wearing...
Not really, light is only useful for sneaking, and companions are clumsy sneakers as it is. So yeah go for heavy.

If it's a vanilla follower, it never hurts to take a look at their UESP page, see what they're predisposed to, so to speak. Some of them have higher stats in light than they do in heavy, and that can mean the difference between them being helpful in a fight, or down on a knee quicker.

*It can also not hurt to jot down her refid, while you're on that page, in case you get separated from her and can't find her.

If you want to RP along the lines of her "choosing" what she wants to wear, you can give her a bunch of stuff and take back what she doesn't automatically equip, however be aware that they will often equip what has the best stats without regard to whether or not they have high skill in it. (ie: your follower has a high 1h skill, but equips a warhammer because it's "better")
Brelyna is a mage and has the first rank in the mage armor perk.
So personally I'd give her clothing to reduce spell cost of alteration and destruction magic and boost her magicka/regen.

I usually give her heavy gauntlets, boots, a cloak and not much else. ;)

Why not go for the gusto and give her Dragon Scale armor with Conjuration fortification enchantments?
