Skyrim SE at 4k
Hi, just got a new TV and wanted to try Skyrim SE in all its 4k glory. My desktop is running 4096x2160 but the nearest option I can select in the Skyrim launcher is 3840x2160 which runs either bordered or windowed. I tried setting the resolution in the SkyrimPrefs file but it reverts to 1080p.

My graphics card is 'only' an NVIDIA GTX970 which I realise is not man enough to play the game at this resolution but I thought I could at least run the game and see what it looked like. Is this likely to be causing the issue?

Edit: just realised I have similar issues running Fallout 4

Well the only thing I can think of is that your desktop res should be the same. I have a 980ti and some texture mods, reshade no enb, barely chugging along at 60 occasionally dropping. You should be able to run on lower settings, medium or high.

Is Skyrim even capable of 4K Resolutions?

I don't see any Options for that...

They said you should be able to, but as far as i'm aware of, the Graphix don't even look Hi-Def at all, lone enough Ultra HD...

I'm currently running the Game on 2560x1440...

I was talking about Special Edition... Srry, if I didn't make that clear...

Yes, I've been playing Skyrim SE heavily modded in 4k 60fps since release. For me it runs smooth as butter and looks incredible. I have a lot of screen shots in 4k in my profile but Steam does something to the shots that make them look horrible. I don't like the look of those so I have uploaded some to my Flickr site that show's just how detailed Skyrim SE is in 4k and heavily modded.

Alt + Enter brings bordered/windowed games into Full Screen mode. Just fyi. Useful advice for in the future. And I love how you have a lower than expected graphics card but an expensive, hopefully awesome monitor. I will say I am quite envious of the 4096x2160 to my 3840x2160.

Anyway, hope you get your problem sortered out!

Looking at my Nvidia control panel...there is resolution option for 4096x2160 in mine also. As 3840x2160 is the standard for 4k resolution I suggest setting your desktop resolution to 3840x2160 if you have the option. Your games will then run at that resolution when you change the resolution in game. Games will prob run better at the 3840x2160 anyways.

I'm playing at 4k, zero issues.

If I set the desktop res to 3840x2160 it doesn't use all the available screen and introduces a really distracting blank spot at the sides of the picture. Alt-Enter doesn't work either. I'll have a look at DSR thanks. For those that are successfully running it at 4096x2160 could you please confirm a) whether your Skyrim launcher already had this as an available resolution option and b) whether you had to do anything else? Many thanks guys.

even an oced 1080 does not maintain 60 fps even without mods when outside so some of you are full of ♥♥♥♥ with your performance claims.

50 fps average with 40 fps minimum for a 1080 here. http://gamegpu.com/images/stories/Test_GPU/RPG/Skyrim_Special_Edition/s_2016_3840.png

Both original and SE Skyrim run fine at 4k. (3840x2160)
Are you sure your screen resolution is 4096x2160? Funny thing about 4k is, even a 3840x2160 native TV as mine, supports 4096x2160, which makes thing looks squished. Try setting your deskto to 3840x2160, that is the preferable 4k format because it upres in the same proportion as 1280x720, 1600x900, 1920x1080.. etc.. 4096x2160 is a werid format not very well compatible with anything.

Ok, so after changing the display scaling I have the desktop and game running in 3840x2160 with no wasted screen real estate. Looks beautiful and even with my modest card it runs rather well with AA disabled. My TV supports 4096x2160 and I'm interested in trying this too so if anyone who has this working can comment on what they had to do I'd be very grateful as this isn't an available resolution in the launcher and editing the SkyrimPref file reverts to 1920x1080.

The method to get this launching in 4k at 4096 2160 is to use the launcher to set the settings all up for you in 16x10 mode, and then you go in and edit the SkyrimPrefs.ini file at %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Skyrim or %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition

You change the lines to say
iSize H=2160
iSize W=4096
