Can your follower fill soul gems?

If I give my follower mace of molag ball and a bunch of empty soul gems, will they fill?

Yes. I always give Lydia a weapon with Soul Trap on it and she does a good job of keeping me supplied with Soul Gems. Just make sure that it is your companion's only weapon, as they don't care whether or not it's enchanted. They will simply use whatever they think is the most powerful weapon available.

One more thing - items have infinite enchantment on followers right? So as long as the mace has a tiny bit of charge left it will stay permanently on her?

No, you will have to recharge their weapon after a certain point. Soul Trap doesn't use up a lot of energy though, so it will take quite awhile before that's necessary.

Get The Black Star as early as you can ( Azure if you prefer ) makes keeping weapon enchantments topped up plus it's a good reusable soul gem for enchanting.
