Edit: make sure they equip the weapon.
No just trade the items with them.
I didn't know you could teach your followers spells though.
also a side note; conjuration is stupidly easy to get to 100 (just find a place where enemies a hostile to you but cant reach you - such as the dome at silent moon camp forge -, double cast bound sword, sheathe, repeat), and legendary (reset it and get the perk points back) so you shouldnt feel too bad about missing out of perk points
I don't know if it's part of vanilla skyrim or not, but you could at least with follower related mods. The trick was to let them pick up the spell book instead of just handing it to them. You could also do the same with a giant's club. Quite amusing!
