I use a Xbox 360 controller and it does work good in this games menu's and even works great with SkyUI if that ever get ported to Skyrim SE.
I started using the controller when power leveling, actually, as I could switch modes and still hold my shield up without having to press anything, using block as a character leveling skill and perk generator. I just got used to it enough and manage well enough with it now that I don't really need to bother with the keyboard and mouse, even though I do think they're technically superior, especially in close quarters turning fights and with aiming a bow.
Being a single player game though, the competition and skill level of the game doesn't really require a keyboard and mouse in general.
I suppose technically the analog stick for directional movement allows for better control than the digital inputs of the WASD keys, but I personally don't think that makes up for the lack of control with a mouse over the other analog stick. Pointing precisely is a bit more important.
I prefer Oblivion, Fallout New Vegas, and Fallout 4 on keyboard, though. Which is weird.
I was hoping they would add better key binding with SSE. I have a usable setup, but once you mess with the mouse buttons (or 'E' key), the menus turn to crap.
I'd be interested in how others deal with that.
I think controllers are better for third person only action games.
Menu and dialogue navigation are definitely much easier with a one, however.
The big one is SkyUI 2.2, but there's a bunch of other sorting mods on the Nexus that I'm still testing as well.
