My favorite starting follower is Teldryn Sero from the Dragonborn DLC. You can buy his help at level 1 for 500 gold. He starts at level 10 and is equipped with Chitin armor and carrries an Elven sword and dagger.
He is a spellsword and comes with Conujure Flame Atronach, so it's like you get two helpers instead of one. He caps at level 60.
He is not essential, but he is protected so usually only you can kill him.
Frea is one of the better followers since she is uncapped and comes with perks as is Celann and Durak from Dawnguard.
He is an awesome follower, even did quite well against LV 50+ Karstaag on Expert difficutlty.
With Companion's Insight (Dragonborn DLC) perk he and a few others in Protected status make him quite useful late game, -- esp. if you are AOE mage like me --I think. With a modded game there are more options and some are more flexible or not in what armor they will wear but I'm rather happy with him.
One of the Companions might offer more DPS ...
I'm not fond of Serana's unmodded AI after she becomes non-essential and even as essential she's a bit too agressive. "Yes, Serana, opening the door to the caged pit of charrus is a good idea."
