No 4k Resolution?
I know that this version of Skyrim is supposed to support 4K Resolution but auto detect keeps setting my graphics at 1080p when I know my computer will run 4K. I have an I7 6700K, 16 Gbs of DDR4 memory, and an Nvidia GTX 1070 Video Card. I'm having the same issue with Fallout 4. The Game auto detects 1080p and will NOT let me change it unless windowed mode is on but then it doesn't fit my display... and yes I have a 4K screen. I've also tried forcing 1080p by editing the configuration file and the game still forces 1080p. Any ideas?

Does your computer run at 4K resolution outside of the game?
Yes and on all other games no problem

May need to verify game cache, re-install your display driver, or even re-install the game. I'm able to select 4K just fine (using DSR on a 1080p monitor, anyway).

I don't have a 4k screen (1080P), but I can select 4K using DSR only if I have it set to windowless and borderless and my monitor resolution is at 4k. I can't select it to be 4k with it set to fullscreen.

I found out that the only way I can change my setting is through Nvidia GeForce Experience. This still posses a problem because the optimal setting are way too high and I'm only getting maybe 30fps. It's definitely playable but it would be nice if it ran more smoothly.

I was going to warn you but I didn't want to start a console vs PC debate. I can run 4k through DSR but it's pointless to do so, since my fps is in the 40's and I can get just a good a picture when using TAA + 1440p and a Lumasharp. All video I've seen from the PS4 in 4K was 30fps and it's not surprising that even the best hardware out right now, wouldn't be able to keep 60fps at this resolution--not on ultra settings and Vivid Weathers enabled anyhow.

i've been playing at 4k since release without problems. ultra settings with TAA on and vync on i have 60fps pegged with no mods on a single 980Ti
Just to be clear.... your resolution for your desktop can hit 3840x2160 or higher right? I can't even TELL you the amount of people who say they have a 4K monitor but really only have a 2560x1440

Yeah it hits 3840x2160 on all other games easily. I can even load up the older version of the game and it appears fine on there too but something about this new auto detect forces me to use Nvidia GeForce Experience to change my settings. I can select 3840x2160 on the menu but when I click "save" it either defaults back to 1080p or automatically checks the "windowed" and "borderless" boxes. The only thing I can think of is I'm running a true 4096 x 2160 on my desktop but the game can only run at 3840x2160. I still wish I could turn down god rays though without the rest of the settings suffering through GeForce Experience because as it sits, I have to use the preset settings in Nvidia.

Well, I defintiely did not mean any insult so I am glad you took that well. xD I can't even tell you the amount of people who think 2560x1440 is a 4K monitor.... blows my mind. And normally I can be pretty insightful on these types of matters but honestly reading most of these post you seem to have a firm grasp of these things to the extent I do, if not more.

My only guess would be possibly the true 4K monitor maybe? I'm rocking a 3840 so I wouldn't know if it is infact that. I do however know that refresh rates at 140hz or higher breaks the game and same with frames going over 72fps so with that in mind, you honestly can't really be sure if it is infact your true 4K. They aren't common at all not many users have ones higher than 3840 so..... maybe its that?

Hmm and it looks like you already tried editing the ini and that would have been my go to if not Gefore Experience.

Try manually changing it in the .ini and then changing the file to read-only

I knew you weren't trying to be insulting and I'm just trying to get the problem narrowed down. However, that's what I thought aswell, it has to have something to do with the monitor.

By the way, this seems to stop the game from reverting back to 1080p so this is very helpful aswell

i'm playing at 4k on a lg uhd tv with a gtx 970 using gefore gaming settings maybe try that route also i forced vsync in the nvida settings to get it to 60 fps

Nvidia's settings still cause fps drops in the 1070 line. It's ok though, I figured out how to manually change the settings in the .ini file and changing the the file to read only prevents auto detect from changing it back. I too am using an LG TV and vsync does help quite a bit for me aswell but the fps do tend to dip really low, particularly outside.
