You must have replied, "Battle-Born".
Yes I did. And even after I liberated whiterun he still kept me in his will.
Whenever you raise the disposition toward someone (selling vegetables/ores/wood ; investing in their shop ; doing task/quest) to the point you can take items worth 25 gold or less from their home... they are considered "friend". Whenever a friend die, you get an inheritance letter such as that one.
The answer as to who that person is can be quite hard to answer as you'd probably have made a lot of friend through various mean. As to why they died, assuming you did not kill them, they can die from vampire attack or other scripted event. In most cases you should not worry too much about it... but if it's one of your usual merchant... weep friend! weep!
Lol! How did you manage to raise his or her disposition? Paying the gold tribute maybe?
Honest pay for honest work.
This can happen if you cast a calm spell on someone. The spell works by raising the target's disposition to that of a friend. If they die while under this effect, the game will send you a letter of inheritance from that npc. Of course, it can also happen even if you don't use a calm spell. I have no idea what could cause that, even though I've had it happen to me before, more than once.
Nice necro...
