Is it even possible to craft Legendary Leather armor??
I was looking at the chart on wiki, and since I don't believe there are any perks associated with Leather Armor, that means the only way to craft/smith it is to raise the Smith skill to 168 thru potions or enchantments...is that correct?

pretty sure it's effected by your perks in smithing. Like you can make it "fine" without the steel perk, but once you get that perk, it goes up a step.

Yes. It's also possible with fur armor. With all the perks, leather armor will at some point actually far exceed the cap on armor. So spending the perk on the matching set isn't necessary.

Are you guys sure? I got the perk for Steel armor, and after getting to 22 Smith, I was able to craft "Superior" Steel armor (w/ a steel ingot). But I'm not able to upgrade my leather armor past "Fine". Maybe one of the later light armor perks does the trick?

you need to max out smithing perk tree for that. you can't make legendary items with that puny 22 in smithing.

That's the exact page I was checkiing out...
OK...on that page, if you look at the chart on Item Quality, it says (for example) that with the correct Perk, you can upgrade items to Legendary Quality with a Smith Skill of 91. BUT without the Perk, you need a Smith Skill of 168 to upgrade to Legendary.

On the Smith Skill Tree, every armor type has a corresponding perk that, if taken, will allow you to upgrade the quality of that armor type with a significantly lower Smith Skill requirement (i.e. the aforementioned Legendary upgrade...91 vs 168).

SO...every type of armor has an associated perk....EXCEPT the hide-fur-leather armors. Since I have the Steel Armor perk from the tree, and a Smith Skill level of 22, I can now upgrade steel armor to Superior (would require Smith skill at 31 w/o the perk). BUT the best I can do with Leather is still only Fine...because there is no associated perk for Leather...you follow me?

So that's my question...it appears that I'll have to have a Smith skill of 168 to upgrade Leather to Legendary status, but only skill of 91 to upgrade every other armor type (provided I take the individual perks associated with each type of armor.

Maybe I missed something...I'll take another look, but when I was just upgrading my Steel armor to Superior, I wasn't getting any option to upgrade my Leather armor to Superior as well. (But maybe I didn't have any Leather in my inventory, so it wasn't showing up as an option...idk.)

I probably wasn't clear before. Yes, you need to use enchanting and smithing potions. You also need a high smithing level.

And to get a very strong leather or fur armor, you'll also need some of the light-armor perks.

So beyond a certain level of smithing/enchanting/alchemy, you can't max out leather armor.

Actually this works rather well. With other types of armor it's a little bit to easy to get to the cap. The armor can be improved to very high levels, but with no extra protection.

The cool thing about leather and especially fur, is that you need to work for a good set of armor.

THAT'S what I was looking for...THANK YOU! I'll probably end up using some other light armor eventually anyway, but up to this point, I really liked the Fur....just 'cuz of the LOOK. Running around as a bare-chested barbarian in skins just feels right...yanno? lol

Maxing out smithing isn't that difficult. And once it's maxed out you can make dragon armor. A fur helmet plus fur armor works well with dragon scales boots and gauntlets.

Yea, I sort of figured I'd end up maxing all Smith perks and skills, just so I can work with all the armor types...I like collecting them. In Morrowind, I had an entire hall in my house (mod) that had mannequins displaying every single armor in the game (like around 40, iirc)...I was kinda proud of that.

IIRC you can if you enchant a full smithing set and drink a handmade smithing potion.
Nettle Nov 17, 2016 @ 12:30pm
I tried that once. Ended up with a smithing boost of 310%. :tipheal:

Thanks...just seems odd that making a set of Legendary Leather armor is, in some ways, more difficult than making a set of Legendary Daedric Armor...lol

You don't need potions. If you don't have a mod to allow you to put any enchantment on any piece of gear you can still enchant a necklace, a ring, your armor and your gauntlets with fortify smithing. If your enchanting skill is high enough and you use a grand soul you can easily get over 200 smithing.
