Sometimes you just makes money on it. Like Killing Motierre after you complete the DB quest chain.

That letter is known for being glitchy. You'll sometimes receive 'letters of inheritance' from npcs you kill. This most often happens if you use calm spells, since these work by temporarily increasing your relationship rank with the targeted npc (thus making it as if they were your 'friend'). Though I've also gotten quite a few of them when I wasn't using illusion magic at all! I have no clue what causes that. I haven't had it happen too often though (I get those letters more often from followers that died under under my service), so it doesn't appear to be super common. Maybe its tied into your speechcraft skill? I know in Oblivion if you could get your 'personality' stat high enough (as in over 100, the maximum normally allowed), a lot of monsters would suddenly no longer be hostile towards you. I wonder if you could get a similar glitch if your speechcraft was high enough?

Yeah it’s weird how these letters work.

There’s this vampiric couple working at a lumber mill near river wood I just bought wood from them cause they were close.

A dragon killed the wife and I received and inheritance letter saying I was a friend of theirs.

I was like really? A good patron maybe but a friend hardly.

Trading with merchants increases their relationship stat with you. That's probably why you got a letter from one of them. Even giving food to farmers is sufficient to increase their relationship with you (you often need to do this to become thane of Falkreath due to how few npcs there are in that town).

I got a Hired Thug sent after me by a mudcrab, a hagraven, a necromancer, and an Assassin once. In the same game. Got a letter of inheritance for Barbas once, when I kept the axe.

Those must be optional actions. None of my actions in Falkreath involved farmers and I don't think the werewolf one counted. The Thane's quest to kill the bandits doesn't count either, it's just the prerequisite for buying a homestead, right?

You only have to do the bandit quest to buy a house. To become thane though, you have to increase your relationship with at least 3 npcs in Falkreath. This can be done by doing quests, selling things to farmers or miners, or even simply buying/selling things from a merchant. For instance, its well-known that you can charge the ebony blade by killing merchants you've been using throughout your playthrough. And yes, you can easily receive letters of inheritance from merchants purely because you sold a bunch of junk to them over the course of several days.

As for quests in falkreath, doing Barbas' quest does count, as long as you go back to talk to Lod. Though simply buying and selling stuff with him will also work. The problem with falkreath is there isn't too many npcs, virtually none of them are essential, and falkreath is an unwalled city that happens to be located REALLY close to a spot where dragons spawn in the game. This all means its really easy for a dragon attack to exterminate enough npcs where you can't become possibly thane of falkreath. Not that being a thane really means much anyway, unless you just really want the follower that comes with the title for some reason.

My experience was carry remains, steal a note, kill a vampire. The bandit quest from the Jarl was to qualify to buy the land.
I haven't done Dragonborn or even killed any dragons in awhile in any games and i always get the courier's note at level 9. Sometimes the courier appears as soon as I exit a building after hitting the level indoors like at a merchant.
