if yes the entrance is the moon dial outside the courtyard! complete that moon dial to enter!
If you can see the balcony doorway on your local map, you're either in the courtyard with a very large sun dial (which is referred to by Serana as a Moon Dial, because they're vampires and rely more on the Moon than the Sun), or you're past the Moon Dial and in the next section (because that balcony door will be in both maps).
You need to search the courtyard for the missing pieces of the Moon Dial. They're easy to spot, as they sort of blink/glisten. One is in the garden, one is in the small pond, and another is on one of the balconies with the tables.
If you're already past the Moon Dial, say so. It's that easy.
If you are past the Moon Dial already, then the alcove you're speaking of should be in a room with several gargoyles that spring to life, 2 upright coffins you can sleep in (except for the fact they're owned), a Vampire Royal Armor, Vampire Boots, and Silver Sword on a cabinet between them, and a ladder leaning against a wall that goes up to a gargoyle statue. The candle on the left side of the alcove will open a secret passage.
