Getting rid of Serena
I just wanted to stop the vampire attacks but I am stuck with her now, I'm afraid that if I return her home I have to decide between joining the vampire or dawnguards, I dont want to join either of them now I am busy with the companions.

neither solution will stop the vampire attacks, they will continue.
You can't stop them until you conclude the Dawnguard questlines.

You can stop them via mods

You can get Dawnguard solders protecting cities too via a mod, but that would be lore breaking unless you have progressed the questline to where Isran is actually recruiting more.

He said "you could try", he didn't say it would work.

Looks like someone hasn't been hard saving periodically as they should. You should hard save at least once every couple of hours. Furthermore I cannot fathom how you managed to get that far into the quest accidentally. I mean that takes some serious doing on the players part, and as far as she is concerned she should behave like any other follower. My advice is if you really do not want to do the quest line yet. Then just reload a previous save, and if that save is a number of hours old. Well you live and learn.

As far as stopping the vampire attacks well that is actually fairly simple. Vampires come out at night, and these events are scripted. So just don't go into cities, or near settlements during the night. If you really need to get into town then travel to a location near the settlement, and then wait until after daybreak. As long as you stay far away enough from the settlements. They will never spawn. Basically they don't happen if you aren't there. Sometimes they will attack you out in the wild, but frankly that is pretty easy to deal with.

My best advice is to use the hearthfire expansion, and build yourself at least one house outside of the cities. That way you can have all the amenities without exposing the locals to any danger. Your house once finished will have a forge, an alchemy lab, a enchanter, shrines, beds, storage, and basically most everything else you will need aside from trainers and merchants. Anyway if you have a save from just before getting to the island. Then reload that save and tell her to wait for you.

open an earlier save pre-dawnguard or before you enter the cave where serana is in the box . uncheck dawnguard in the quest menu and dont set herr free till you're ready . if you go back to a save thats at say level 8 you can delay dawngurad till level 40 or 25

always use multiple save. I use 5 for the open map and at least 2 per city/town
