Black screen freeze after exiting the Frozen Hearth in Whiterun
I'm relatively new to modding Skyrim so not sure if this is a mod issue or a general game issue. Whenever I try to leave the Frozen Hearth, the loading screen happens as normal but then the game completely freezes on a black screen. Sometimes there is sound still, usually there isn't. I've looked around to see if anyone else is experiencing this particular crash and not found anything.

The few general fixes I've found (changing shadow settings, disabling "A Quality World Map", loading an older save, etc.) haven't helped. With loading an older save, I can enter and exit other buildings in Whiterun fine, but the moment I enter the Frozen Hearth I'm stuck and can't leave. I have also tried disabling / uninstalling my mods in batches to see if one of them is the culprit but had no luck.

Here is my load order (I use NMM and LOOT):

#1 does this problem happen in a completely new game?

I ask because =
if it does, its likely a mod conflict
if it does not, then it is sometthing wrong with your save game
Just tried it, and it doesn't happen in a new game... Darn. Does that mean my old save is screwed and I'll never be able to enter Frozen Hearth, or is there something I might be able to do to fix it?

To be honest, I dont know. Maybe it was some interaction between certain mods or maybe something is just glitched.
The problem is, that you cant really troubleshoot an affected save game because it might lead you in the wrong direction, therefore the reason why the new game question is so important.

If you have a lot of old saves you could maybe test each and maybe have luck to find one where the problem not appears

Good chances if nothing has changed in your mod list then what ever broke that save will happen again.

However if you've done something like add or remove mods mid-play (without starting a new game) then you might be able to fix it with just a new game.

Considering its happening when you try to leave the Frozen Hearth it's probably something that changed the area around Winterhold or the College. That kind of reverse-engineering a mod list doesn't usually end up well, though. It could be a hundred different things.

I had read somewhere that the save game cleaner for the original Skyrim works for Skyrim SE.
Not sure if it still does. Going to look for it and see.

Your save will be worse off after falrim tools then before. The tool is quite dangerous, And doesnt do what it claims properly.

Any regulars around here avoid it like the plague.

As BlackShadow said regarding use of save cleaners - DO NOT USE! They are for when updating mods only. They DO NOT and CANNOT repair saves! See the following for complete information (while it is specifically directed at removing mods, the principles as regards saves and save cleaners are connected and are the main underlying issue):

The above is the final and definitive thread concerning that topic.
