Take Up Arms quest glitch

I go to hit Vilkas, and he attacks me with the "you won't leave here alive" dialogue. I thought it was because I had a follower, but after disbanding her I'm still attacked. Even if I don't attack Vilkas, I'm attacked.
I've tried searching for other solutions to this, but the only time someone else has had this issue (from what I can tell) is with mods, which I have none of. I don't want to reset my save, so is there a fix?

Look at the notes about ending the fight. Also pay attention to requirments for fight.

If you're referring to the equipment I should use, then I don't think this will work, as I've primarily been using my fists. I assumed that he isn't supposed to attack me in this quest simply because everyone else around attacks me as well, and this wiki page says nothing about that, from what I can see.

Make sure you don't have a bounty on yourself. Talk to a guard, do you get"wait I know you!"?
Also tell your follower to wait in town.

Exit game and restart computer, might be page file is corrupt or held data in ram.

To match what you said, I left Whiterun and disbanded my follower, and talked to a guard to confirm I don't have a bounty. Then, I talked to Vilkas, did nothing, and he attacks me along with all of the other Companions.
