CTD Modded Skyrim SE
Hi everyone!

I've been going through multiple posts around here to try and find a solution to my issue without success so I thought I was gonna try posting my issue and see what comes from it.

Overnight the game decided to crash first as I went to Whiterun to talk to Amaund Motierre (last quest of the Dark Brotherhood) after the Sanctuary got destroyed.
As I entered The bannered Mare the game crashed for no reason and now it's CTD on load so I know that save is now corrupted...

Apparently the crash logs are useless but I've seen that the LOOT load order is usually asked in that sort of issue. I didn't install, remove or update any mod since the last lengthy session of gaming.

For anyone who could help, here's my LOOT Load order :

Can you load saves older than the current one? Back up saves?

Most likely it's a mod that alters the interior or the NPCs inside of the Mare. There are a lot of them.

Poissibly disabling the mods might help you find the problem, but in a mod list that long it could be all kinds of compatibility issues.

Working backwards is ill-advised. If no one can point at the specific mods for you, then you'll most likely need to rebuild the mod list from scratch, while testing groups of mods. This is done by removing all mods completely and then installing only a few at a time while testing with new games frequently.

I don't know how well-versed you are at modding Bethesda RPGs, but even a mod list 100-150 mods long needs a few days or 8-12 hours of research and testing usually. Experience can cut this down. The result is a stable game that you could potentially put 300-500+ hours into without frequent crashes, bugs or hassle.

Not really here to help...

but after a certain number of mods, you really ought to stand back and ask yourself, is it worth it?

Modding is all fine and dandy, but there exists a point, a number of mods, that after said point, the game you paid for simply does not exist anymore.

It would stand to reason that after such a point, you might actually be better off finding a more agreeable game. A polished turd is still a turd after all.

Not to say that Skyrim isn't a good game, its a great game. But every time I see someone post their load order that needs help with crashing, I see these massive lists and feel like the crashing is simply a product of the game not wanting to exist anymore.

Anyway, crashing when entering a Cell location almost always has to do with conflicts within the Cell, in this case the Bannered Mare.

Your likely culprits, are literally any mod that has changed ANYTHING that is on the inside of that Cell. This could be NPCs, static items such as furniture etc, quests, Cell lighting, texture/mesh changes...etc etc.

Your first step, should be to create a new save, and then try to enter the inn. If it doesnt crash, then something has gotten borked on that specific save. If it does crash however, then it is more likely that it is being caused by a mod conflict.

With the size of your list however, actually going through and determining which if any could be the conflict is going to be a painful task.

So good luck. Hopefully someone here can provide actual help.

That's not a massive list. It's actually reasonable. All of my modded Bethesda games end up in the 100-150 range. It does take research, experience, practice, patience, and repetition to get it all to slot in right.

The game might be "modded" by definition, but nearly everything I add is on top of what the game already offers. It's more, more, more. So I don't think this idea that you have mutated the game into something unrecognizable has any real merit.

Even then its a gamble. I mean, this is an engine after all where a stray bit of clutter could kill you, lol.

You could spend 1000s of hours trying to sort everything properly to avoid crashes, and still run in to a CTD or wholesale freeze regardless.

It's not a gamble. Programming is not a gamble. Math is not a gamble.

Do it right and you will be rewarded. Do it wrong and you will have wasted time.

You are right in one way, I generally experience one crash every 7-15 hours resulting in a loss of 5-15 minutes based on where an autosave or quicksave was. This is what modders simply understand as an acceptable repercussion.

If it was so broken as to be unplayable, no one would mod the game.

Clearly, someone is modding the game.

Tell that to the game engine that reliably crashes when dealing with numbers that are over 6 digits.

Oh sure, its an engine limitation, but a smart programmer would have simply coded it to truncate any value that was over a certain upper value limit.

I mean, my calculator doesnt crash when adding 1 to 999,999. And its arguably a much more basic piece of software than a video game.
my most hated enemy plays mario on a scientific calculator so im inclined to ask how does this imply to the OPs question? math isnt a gamble and his (at the time) 5 year old daughter programmed it for him (yea smart kid)

What are you talking about? In reference to the game?

Something in the ops post jumped out at me ... they didn't add or remove any mods since the last session.

So my question is ... what mods were added or removed on that save period?
Can you use WICCO and Bijin together? Last I heard you couldn't. Read WICCO again and see what it is compatible with.
You're using CBBE and have a UNP-Undies plugin?

Edit: also, if you're using Bijin, use the AIO patch that comes with it. It's with each of them but you only need 1. Activate it and deactivate the individual plugins.

The Creation Engine, the game engine used by Skyrim, has an upper integer value that once exceeded causes CTDs. Its mostly seen when creating potions or enchantments with effects that have effect values in the 7 digit range.

However, the engine handles any value bellow 1 million just fine.

Its a math related crash as the game uses those values when calculating damages and other effects.

This makes using the restoration/alchemy/enchanting loop a math based gamble as going to high will net you a CTD, most of the time.

Thanks for the Help I know about the compatibility issues but I've been playing 100hrs+ with that mod list without issues up until now and don't get why it started to crash at that point...

Will try cleaning that tho and give a try to an old save. Thanks!

I've got 2000hrs+ on the game... played it multiple times non-moded, bug-corrected, lightly and heavily moded. I enjoyed -and still do- the game every time.

And I do play a crap ton of other games, but yeah, once their ~30hrs lifespan is over I go back to a game hundreds of thousands people are still playing almost 10 years after it's release.

Polished turd or not Skyrim is widely considered one of the best video game of the last decade if not two (to me Half-Life 2 but I digress).

So is it worth my effort to just ask a -still very large- community for help? Me spending hours uninstalling, reinstalling, sorting, testing my mods to see where the problem is? The answer is quite simple I think, yes, yes it is.
