Ordinator Destruction Perks
Doing my first straight mage playthrough and so far, it's one of the most satisfying playthroughs I've done so far. That is largely because of the amazing Ordinator perk overhaul mod.

Some of the mid and high level Destruction perks such as flash fire and storm blast, sound like they have area of effect aspects to them, however, and I'm afraid to take them because I'm worried they'll hurt my followers. Does anyone know if these area of effect perks damage only hostiles or if my followers might get burned in the crossfire?

As part of the Vanilla game on SE (oldrim/dragonborn dlc) you can get "Companions Insight" from one of the Black Book Quests. I have been using Amazing Follower Tweaks (AFT) for ages that has a friendly fire type setting as well.

Yeah, but in the meantime. . .

just updated my last post.
AFT

There are some others but they are a bit outdated. Now a newer(ish) mod that I am considering on my next playthrough is EFF Extensible Follower Framework.

EFF: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/7003

AFT: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/6656

there is also a Immersive Amazing Follower Tweaks but I'm not familiar yet with that one.

OK, since I have only used AFT in my playthroughs I can vouch for it. I hear EFF is great but I'm not 100% sure it has a friendly fire type setting.

When I'm considering a mod I have not used before ONE of the things I do is look at recent endorsements (AFT 5 so far today---EFF 1 so far today) and the recent posts although when doing ladder you have to be careful because it's a lot like a product review on Amazon cuz sometimes it's the users fault. That's why I don't consider any one factor the end all cure all to my decision. Endorsements on mods is not a bad thing to consider along the way.

They still take damage from AE effects. Only direct hits do no damage. (Black Book)

Yes, is why I keep AFT. Even with AFT I hear them complain but they don't actually react by physically attacking you. Only NPC follower that sometimes has a problem is Serana and that's with other NPC's. :steamhappy:

We are getting off topic. I was asking specifically if the perks from the ordinator mod that have aoe can cause friendly fire

I misunderstood. I mistook the above response, apologies.

Other than what I've offered so far I can only say I stopped using Ordinator a while ago. As my load order became larger and larger it just didn't work well and/or took too much patching. Don't get me wrong, it's a great mod and I enjoyed playing with it but it hasn't been in my load order for almost a year or at least 8 months. I am currently looking for another Perk overhaul type mod for my next load order/playthrough.
