Make sure you launch your game at least once so it writes the registry files that LOOT should detect. Just to the launcher is good enough.

i just tried that and got nothing, the error message im getting says

"Error: Game-specific settings could not be initialised. The specified game "Skyrim Special Edition" is not installed or does not match a game defined in LOOT's settings."

Did you try changing some settings before closing the launcher? Just click on what graphics settings you'd like to use before closing it. See if that works.

I use to have this issue, i believe i fixed it by running loot via MO2. trying running it from inside your mod manager. For someone reason mine seperates the mods from the game folder itself (which actually makes things easier for me should i break anything).

Then I'm not sure. I just got the same error and fixed it by doing that. Hopefully you restarted LOOT so it could check again. Also, did you install the game to the default directory? (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\) If not, try pasting your directory into LOOT (Three dots > Settings) and see if it finds it then. Paste it under the Install Path column in the Skyrim SE row.

may be a permission problem? loot finds my games installed on my E: drive.
