That may be slightly different for other browsers. MO2's nxm handler is nxmhandler.exe.
I don't recall the name of the NMM handler but you should be able to re-associate NMM with nxm files by opening Settings then the General tab and check "Associate with NXM URLs".
But as Chef states download manually and you can choose which manager you want to use.
Both manager have an icon to that.
Manual does work but doesn't retrieve the meta data from nexus -- so the version and update status won't appear in the mod manager and have to be manually edited. That isn't all that difficult, but it is tedious. I haven't used NMM in a really long time but it had a "fetch missing meta data" feature that did mostly work, if I recall correctly, but is not present in MO2.
I prefer downloading all my content manually. It is a less of a pain to work with organized folders and add ID and version number to mods after downloads, compared to working with download folders and constantly changing file names in them. That is 100% just my personal preference though. It will feel other way around for some players for sure.
But instructions given are quite correct one. The nxmhandler.exe in MO installation folder should allow to select the application used for NXM-links. Firefox setting will indeed do the same.
OP choice on mod manager is theirs, soon OP will realise the mistakes he/she is making.
I do the same and I agree with every word.
