How do I store horses

I dont know how horses work in skyrim, if I have to buy a new one if he dies or if he will just respawn in the stable that I bought. However when I was just exploring the map, I found a horse near Icewater Jetty, it didn't say "steal horse", it just said that I could ride him already. However, whenever I dismount him, he starts walking and I guess he is like going back to the spot I found him. Im currently in Whiterun, so its a long way until he reaches it.
My point is, I neither bought him nor stole him, just took him since he was alone, is there any way to store him so that he doesnt start walking away? Also I'd like to know if store-bought horses respawn once they die and if they have the same behaviour, and also if I can store them.

Horses you buy stay with you and fast travel with you even if you are not riding them, but they can be killed and you will have to buy a new one when this happens.There are mods that help with this. Conveient Horses has a mcm menu that lets you set your horse to essential so that it can't be killed and another that lets you set aggression so it won't be always jumping into the fight if you don't want that. The mod also works with Conveient Horse Hearding that lets you keep multiple horses at a location that you choose.

The variable is called "LastRiddenHorse" It is called upon on fast travel, So long as the map marker you choose has a horse marker linked to it.

This is the only horse variable the game will remember, Other than ownership. You can own multiple horses, But the one you ride last will be the one called for in the game functions.
