Armor Rating reads a big fat ZERO on all armor, assistance required!
Hello, so I have been having an issue with this...problem, for a few days, now. I used console codes to set my armor rating, so honestly its not too terrible, but I just get annoyed when I see all armor, always, reads an armor rating of 0. Now, I've come across plenty of posts regarding this issue and how to analyze it, however not how to fit the issue.

Here are some examples: "The Game seems to have a limit on how high your damage reduce can be that is around 80%. When you reach that amount the game will reduce the armor rating to ensure that you cant have 100% damage reduce. I used the alteration spell dragon hide winch reduces 80% physical damage for 30 seconds and as long as i had the buff all armors had 0 rating. when the buff was gone the armor ratings went back to normal. i think on npcs the armors will still give the normal amount of armor it just visually shows 0. if you have that permanently you might have some sort of cheat active like "modav damageresist 5000" or some sort of similar effect also some overpowered armor mods."

Or

"Ok i looked it up to be sure, its not that it goes over armor rating cap it has to do with going over damage reduction cap. apparently thats at about 80% damage reduction (i'd assume thats for physical, not magical or elemental). the time I've had it happen was because of a bunch of mods that when spell effects were applied heavily reduced the damage i took, i cant remember the specific ones though. so i'd suggest looking at your mods and seeing which ones might be reducing damage, maybe some form of armor cloak spell or enchantment."

And finally:

"Physical damage reduction is capped at 80%. This occurs at 567 displayed armor rating when wearing all four pieces of armor, 667 when not wearing any pieces of armor, or 542 if wearing 4 pieces of armor and a shield. If you have 100 armor skill (Light or Heavy) and all relevant armor perks, this requires a tempered armor rating of about 135. You can increase your tempered armor rating by 1 roughly every 2 points of Smithing with the appropriate perk, or every 4 without. Therefore, at 100 Smiting you will need 85 base armor with the appropriate perk, which is not achievable without a shield with Light Armor (though Dragonscale comes close at 82 for the set) and requires at least a Steel Plate set for Heavy Armor. With Fortify Smithing enchanted apparel and Fortify Smithing potions you can boost Smithing even further, which can potentially allow any material for which a Smithing perk exists to reach the cap. At the extreme end, you will need about 126 Smithing to make Steel Armor hit the cap, and about 154 Smithing for an Elven set. Unfortunately, Fur, Hide, Studded, Leather, and Iron armor are not affected by any Smithing perks and so cannot be improved as much."

Overall, nothing is actually working to cease the armor rating for each piece of armor to cease reading zero. I don't know if I'm just reading this data and glossing over the obvious answer, but I'm out of my depth at this point. Here is what I've done thus far:

Used the "modav" console commands to adjust damage resist.

Selected myself in third person and used the "resurrect" console command.

Reset all perks via console

Re-installed and checked different mods and how they effect one another, but I didn't see anything after testing pretty much all of them that could cause this problem.

Yeah, so I'm about there, please help.

"Selected myself in third person and used the "resurrect" console command."

why you wanna do this?

#1 does that problem appear in a new game?
madman3247 Oct 27, 2018 @ 2:48pm
Oh, sorry yo, should have explained that one. Apparently, resurrecting oneself resets the character...and it did, but I immediately experienced the issue again after a load screen and smithing/enchanting something., so I'm thinking its a perk that keeps raising everything beyond my ability to identify it. Still, console commands SHOULD force everything back into what one sets them to, not sure, though.

It doesn't appear in a new game, which is even more problematic as I raise in level and apparently...my new found god hood....I simply can't escape this issue.

if it not happening in a new game than its kinda hard if not impossible to track down that problem, given that the potential range of problem could go from mod conflicts to some sort of corrupt save games

just curious, but did you remove mods while playing your current playthrough?
cfs111 Oct 27, 2018 @ 2:59pm
What is your skill level for armor currently? And sounds like you have been mucking about with the console changing all kinds of values that SHOULD NOT be changed from the console. You may have so warped these values for your character that the game engine can no longer calculate these things correctly.

If it is not present on a new game then the "bug" is now baked into that save. Chances are the only answer to your issue is start a new game and leave the DEBUGGING tool, console, alone. The console is NOT a cheat engine.

If you don't know what you're doing, using console commands can cause your game to malfunction! Executing the wrong command can cause your game to stop working normally; furthermore, you may not become aware of such malfunctions right away, and you may not be able to trace their cause. They can cause problems like making quests impossible to complete, altering your game's display, all kinds of game behaviors, your ability to play your character, and your ability to play the game at all. Solutions are not always easy, and may involve losing saved games or reinstalling your game.
Create and archive a permanent saved game before using the console. (This mitigates only some kinds of risks.) If you need to use the console to fix a glitch, try to use the least-powerful command possible.
Your best bet for help if your game is crashing or not operating properly due to a console issue is on the producer's official forums. You may see if someone in this wiki's Discord server has a suggestion. You may not get any kind of answer right away, or a solution at all. You might also try asking a question on this article's talk page with the same idea: you may or may not receive a timely reply to your question or problem, and you may not receive a solution at all.

Did a bit of googling, apparently resurrecting the player does even more harm than resurecting "just" an unique NPC.
cfs111 Oct 27, 2018 @ 3:13pm
Yea, Grumpy. I have spent 100s of hours testing different console commands and thier effects on the game. The absolute three worst commands that will almost always lead to a bugged out game are

caqs - complete all quest stages -- instant ruined game if it does not ctd
psb -- player spell book -- while this one will not necessarilly break the game right off the bat it can often lead to ctd when opening the magic menu.
ressurect -- does not do what you think it should.

Bummer. Ah, not any that would effect the game like this, which is what I thought at first, but tried the new game experiment, so it confirmed my issue.

pure texture mods aside, most mods are not safe to remove without new game

The thing is when removing mods from the game you have little timebombs baked into the save. is there a 100% chance they will explode and causing issues in the future? no.
but if at some time in the future that playthrough behaves weird, you will never know if thats a "normal" mod conflict or is it because of one of these timebombs.

Ah, lemme stop ya there. I do very much know what I'm doing with the console commands and have spent hundreds of hours modding, as well. I used the command on a completely different save to experiment with the console, however the zero armor rating appeared beforehand. The bug had worked its way in via a different way, still can't figure it out, though.

In all honesty, the console is not as much of a complicated boogeyman you make it out to be, lol. Oh, my current armor rating was at 1200 before I used commands, the new save displays the "forceav" command results, so its at 198, currently.

Yup, they were texture and lighting/weather mods, which are not harmful to remove mid-game.
cfs111 Oct 27, 2018 @ 3:31pm
Have fun then. I am out. Good luck.

By the way I had no idea you had tried on new games or that you had used the console on a different save as you did not explain that earlier. I was only going with the information you gave. From your op it appeared that you had used the console on the current save.

Further, I think you will find that ALL the other old farts will agree with my assesment of the console, considering that combined we have tens of thousands of hours in this game our experience more than likely trumps yours. I personally have 1400+ hours on xbox and 2923 hours on oldrim pc and 400+ hours on SSE. So I obviously have no clue what I am talking about.
madman3247 Oct 27, 2018 @ 3:41pm
I mentioned it in my discussion with Grumpy, seeing as how you were reading Grumpy's posts to my issue, I figured you read them.

Alright, well take your tens of thousands of hours of experience, of which you so ironically can't figure out my problem, and take it somewhere else, you egotistic douche bag...lol, seriously, who mentions something like that and expects it to work out?

Ciao. old fart.

Nah man, you're done, remember? Thanks for not contributing with your thousands of hours of experience, though, have a fantastic day!
