Only thing I can suggest is google buying Honeyside and see if the bugs section of a wiki has any tips to get it to work.
Besides that, helping people of the hold is only a requirement to become a thane. In Riften, buying the house is another prerequisite to become thane too, and I'm pretty sure you have to buy it before the Yarl even asks you to help people. Thus I'm surprised you've mentioned helping people already.
