Clothes over Equipted armors?
I was wondering if anyone knew of a mod or anything so I could wear more practical clothes or anything else whilist still having decent armor ratings. For example, I would wear the theif's guild armor as a vanity but my actual stats come from a set of iron armor? Kindof like a costume from ESO or similiar ideas?

You could probably achieve that via XEdit

Regular clothing has no armor rating but can be enchanted. Mage armor spells like Ebonyflesh boost armor rating when wearing no "real" armor. Those can be dual casted and also combined with cloak spells[en.uesp.net].

However, in the particular scenario you describe, improving the Thievs Guild armor to Legendary (assuming high crafting skills and smithing potions) is a good option and will protect you as well or better than iron armor.
I think the OP is asking for something like the costume system they have in ESO (I know people don't like it but I'm going there) were you can select an outfit or disguise that changes your appearance but leave the actual armour as it is.

I don't know of a mod that does this, but there is probably one out there.

I liked ESO :steamhappy:
The easiest way would be to change values of "costume" You want with Creation Kit or Tes5Edit.

Creation Kit is for creating mods, so it's not exactly an external programme.
TES5Edit is an essential tool for using mods, it's used among other things for cleaning mods,

These are fairly standard tools for modders, especially if you want to make your own mods, such as editting armours so they look like other outfits.

You might not want to create your own mod, but if you do these are the basic tools to do so.
