Dawnguard Bloodline quest - next quest not starting

I'm currently playing through the dawnguard questline.

After finishing "bloodline" (refusing the gift), the next quest "a new order" won't start.

Anyone know how to fix that?

Have you used any Console commands? because if you have the only solution is to load an old save and try again.

Otherwise go back and try to speak to thingy in castle dawnguard.

I've tried the commands listed on the wiki.

When I get to castle dawnguard, there is no vampire attack and the dawnguard leader just has generic dialoge like during the previous quest (e.g. I can ask about what new vampire hunters should do) - but none related to the quest.

did you leave serana somewhere? im just guessing but to progress you need to reunite them. then you should get the choose a side option. or have you done this part and rejected the offer? what does your journal say? is bloodline marked as completed?

just ran some google searches. some people have encountered bugs with this. theories for why range from having a follower present when you find serana, to the vigilant guy being dead when you enter the cave, to having mods. some of them managed to get it to work though by reloading a save from before you get the bloodline quest. hope you get it fixed.

I had no follower when I met Serana in "Awakening".

I can load the earliest save I have (just outside castle vokuhila) and join the vampires just fine.

When I load that save and refuse the offer, I get booted out of the castle, "bloodline completed" appears but "a new order" does not start.


I'd say "I'll just play the quests on my next playthrough" but crossbows and bolts are only available in castle dawnguard. *sigh*

im playing it as we speak. but im playing vanilla. the fact you can join vamps but not dawnguard makes me think you've hit one of the bugs. could be one of your mods if you have any. if you only use one save file though and can't join dawnguard then its either new game or join the vamps. unless there's a way to uninstall dlc and completely restart the questline? you'd need to check how to do that though, i'm not even sure it's possible just making more guesses. sorry

I'm not using any mods currently. On old skyrim, I had the unofficial patches (and skse and skyui) and had no problems with that questline. From what I've heard, Bethesda made the horrible decision to disable archivements when mods are in use, so I wanted to play through without mods for now.

I just fixed this bug after ages (fixing it was super simple in the end)!

Just make sure that when you get on the boat to castle volkihar at the end of Bloodline serana is your only follower. I had both Inigo (mod follower) and Benor with me too. As soon as i tried dismissing them both BEFORE getting on the boat it was all fine and A New Order triggered when Harkon banished me.
