As for male characters, I've only come across a couple sets that properly fit a mage look. They were both part of a mod that added multiple sets into the game, which I can't quite remember the name of. For a reference, one of the sets added in had black steel plated pieces on a black robe.
One of these perhaps?

However, you can get the Mage Armor perk that lets robes have nearly the same protection of light armor.
And then there are Mage Armor spells.
The most effective mage gear you could have in Oblivion was basically naked. Your Spell Effectiveness would jump to 100%. However, so would your Weakness to Everything.
If one wants to look at it another way, anyone who detects them during their efforts to remain stealthy can be rewarded with eye candy for their hard work.
