Failure in unpacking mod, using NMM: "A problem occurred during install"
Okay, yesterday I started to install mods using Nexus Mod Manager. I followed the guides, and youtube vids and it worked fine. Today however, I wanted to install the Realistic water 2 mod, but it doesnt install.

Here's what I did:
I have already installed these mods: Unofficial skyrim patch, SMIM, SkyUI, skse64, Skyrim flora Overhaul and Skyrim grass plugin.
I downloaded from the NMM website the Realistic water 2 mod manually, I opened NMM using admin rights. I add the mod from file, than I activate and install. At 50% unpacking it stops, saying:

"A problem occurred during install:
Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

I use the newest version of Nexus Mod Manager, I've restarted the app multiple times, redownloaded it multiple times and even tried the previous version. Sofar it still doesn't work.

Any ideas?

Generic problem with current version of NMM. Any possible internal error in it can be causing it. There is a reason why it was abandoned.

Nexus team returned to NMM one more time, to fix an issue related to upcoming changes. There is a security issue that will be updated for NMM, Vortex and Mod Organizer 2. Old managers will stop working with Nexus downloads, once that has passed through. It is possible (though a bit unlikely) that upcoming 0.65 release of NMM will fix your problem.

NMM is no longer in development, or officially supported by anyone. I would recommend taking a look at Vortex or Mod Organizer 2 instead.

Why did you download it manually? Works perfectly fine downloading and installing via NMM. Source: I'm using it.

I download all of my mods manually and install them with manager. It is easier to keep them in named folders and version numbered subfolders, instead of trying to look something from mod manager download folders.

Each their own of course.

I like Vortex, but it is in early development and sometimes behaves unexpectedly. I would not suggest anyone who did not understand file systems and how hard links work to use it in its current state.

Yeah, I get that. I was in Vortex closed alpha group, but ended up modding my 64bit games with Mod Organizer 2 instead.

Problem with NMM is that ESL-update (which was community update - NMM was already out of development) messed up several things. NMM can fail to install archives, or install content from them to wrong folders - especially over file updates.

These problems are making it damn hard to say when player has an issue with mod archive and when they have issue with NMM.

Which is why I am outright recommending moving to another mod manager.

However - as mentioned above - Nexus staff took a quick surprise stab at NMM, to bring it in line with required updates with Vortex and Mod Organizer 2. I am unsure if they have fixed any other things than protocol. We will see, when update comes online.

Thanks guys, I installed Vortex (it was really easy to hop the existing mods over from NMM)
And now the unpacking works great!
Only downside I see with Vortex so far is the way the dependencies are handled.

Thanks again!

If you are new to Vortex, then Gopher has an ongoing tutorial series for it. Worth to check out.

Some advice...sometimes if you disable a mod, to check on if it is causing a problem or not and then you re-enable it, the esp file will somethimes not get re-enabled and you will have to do enable it yourself in the plugin tab and then hit the sort plugins button to get it in the right load order

Vortex keeps fu c king with me so I still use NMM, haha.

NMM has trouble allocating enough resources to unpack large, compressed files (like 1.5GB in size or more). It'll usually work after a couple tries, though.
