Other than reloading, try using the wait option in game, ie wait 1hr or 12hr / 2hr etc
Yeah, I've found waiting usually works. Not this time. I tried waiting in 1 hour increments about 8 times. Nothing changed. As I said, I reloaded saves, quit and restarted the game with no effect.
Whenever Harkon boots me out for refusing his disease, the first Follower I acquired who has not been Dismissed, but is only "Waiting", appears next to me by the rowboat.
Same person also appears on the boat when we get to Japhet's Folly, and I have to drag them along so they don't get completely lost.
The last playthrough I used the same mods as I have now, I didn't have that bug. There's lots of people having this same bug, it can't all be them with the same mods.
It's not about which specific mod you're using its the combination and yes, you can have that problem with your specific mods because every list is different, using different mods, of different versions, with different hardware, amounting to different results.
It is your mods.
Your complaint of "always running into bugs" is almost certainly a result of a badly modded game.
No, that is not what I said. I said on THIS playthrough I'm running into bugs. My LAST playthrough, I did not run into THIS particular bug. With the same mod list. In fact, I made a bad choice (for me) in my last game, and went back 2 saves in that playthrough, so that I could choose NOT to become a vampire by Harkron. Each time I came to that spot, I had zero issues. I've run into plenty of bugs in the vanilla game, I assure you. Not this one, in particular, but others. I think Bethesda fix some issues with their updates that trigger other issues with areas where there were no bugs before. Don't always blame mods for problems. Especially since so many others are having the exact same problem.
As you said, "because every list is different, using different mods, of different versions, with different hardware, amounting to different results." And yet the same bug is there for different people. In fact, that whole spot is incredibly bug-ridden, and there's even work-arounds on You Tube for some of the issues - like the gate guard not acknowledging Serana and won't let you in. I didn't have that issue, but others have.
Anyway, I digress. I was actually looking for someone to help with a work-around, so I can progress in the questline. If you don't have knowledge of such a work-around, then I would thank you for your comments, but it was finding a solution to being able to progress was the reason I posted in the first place.
There are a number of bugs related to first getting into the Castle, but I haven't personally encountered any while using the USSEP.

Read through the bug list on the bottom for solutions to common bugs.
Very helpful...thank you. I did find another bug list but it was nowhere near as detailed as the link you posted. When I couldn't progress, I went back to an older save. Pity it was 2 levels ago. :( I will be sure to save prior to entering the castle when I run through the quest again, and I'll try console commands to progress through the stages if nothing else works. Thanks again.
Psssh, I lose an hour or two every 40-50 hours on some nonsense like this. It's the Bethesda Way. It's why I have 5 manual saves spanning about 6-10 hours.
I have not added any new mods to my list in a couple of years, at least, except for ones I make myself - player homes, that sort of thing. I get either a single or set of recurring bugs that is either caused by or simply also affects My Home Is Your Home.
Bug 1: Hadvar's horse follows the cart all the way to the end, and stands in Hadvar's spot where he asks "Who are you?"
Bug 2: There's a loud clattering sound as we're exiting the cart at Helgen, like it's been flipped over, but nothing is moved or missing, and Ralof walks behind the player while Hadvar calls off names.
Bug 3: The "Let's talk about home" option for My Home Is Your Home doesn't appear unless I have acquired several followers (about 6 or 7), or until I move it one spot up or down in the list, then reload the save. It can stay in that spot for the next several New Games, and there's no problem. Then, one or all of these bugs appears at the start of a New Game, and MHIYH stops working again until I move it back where it was the last time.
So basically, I move one mod up one spot to fix bugs in a New Game, then move it down one spot back to its original place when the bugs appear again several New Games later.
Is it Tuesday? Then it's the Tuesday bug. Is it Saturday? It's the "because it's Saturday" bug.
It has nothing to do with EXE updates/patches, driver updates, Windows update, or Steam updates. It happens when none of those things happen. I have Windows Update set to Let Me Choose, not Auto-Update. I have GFE set to "Notify me and I'll decide", and I run several driver revisions behind. The only updates I accept are the forced Steam Client updates.
Bug 2: same one as for bug 1, also running high frame rates is know to cause this.
Bug 3: is not the base game. That is a mod you are complaining about.
