Because they are tagged as being essential and the game never does remove that tag, even when the civil war is over and it would be safe to kill them.

Its the same reason you can't walk into the Imperial Barracks and kill Tullis before the final battle.
Yeah, doesn't matter which side you do, the named officers are unkillable, unless you mod or use console commands.

That is one of many bugs they should have fixed.

If you're talking about the Legates in charge of the various Imperial camps, this is normal. If you were an Imperial, the Stormcloak officers would be likewise immortal. I'm not sure why the devs decided to make them immortal, but they are.

Wow, when I clicked on this, it had 0 responses and only showed me a blank box. I hit "POST" and see there are comments from several hours ago. Good job, Steam.

OP: What they said.

I've been experiencing that as well. The thread shows a post quantity, yet no responses show when you click on the thread title. Only by hitting refresh do they show up.

BGS forgot to remove the essential tags after the Civil War is done therefore the command to eliminate enemy remnants camps will forever remain unheeded unless one uses a mod like Civil War Aftermath or Killable Generals to fix this oversight.

commanders in camps are essential .... this solves it: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/3484 I use it myself and it just works

After the Civil War was done and the Imperials win (I'm sure the other way around is the same) I am able to go into the still existing Stormcloak camps and wipe out everyone - including "named" leaders (I'm assuming they're leaders) However, it never used to be that way. I could kill everyone EXCEPT that one named character, and only get his health down but couldn't kill him. And I'm not using a mod of any kind that would have changed that. I can only assume that Bethesda changed that somewhere along the line.

They have made a few stealth bug fixes here and there such as removing vampire spawns in town (outside of the Traveler who targets the Dragonborn rather than random townspeople) so it is possible that they finally did get around to fixing it themselves.
That will save a load order slot that Killable Generals would occupy for anyone who was using that up until now.

Although it is possible that Bethesda changed that, given Bethesda's record, it is more like that a mod in Lady Aeleanor'soad order is doing so. Mods do not necessarily change only what the mod author says they do, very frequently they change other things as well. The surest way of finding out is to open the load order up in xEdit, and checking (in this case by checking the records for the appropriate NPCs).

Not that this is really an for game play, rather it is for curiosity's sake (though it is a good idea to check in xEdit and know how to use it to fix compatibility issues, etc).
