Does SKSE save file size slowly grow over time?
Been wanting to ask this question... But I play Oldrim. Hopefully I'm not in the wrong forum because Oldrim forum is probably dead as heck right now.

My SKSE save file size increases by a few bytes each save. But they add up. It's been a long time since I played Skyrim, but I think last time, it got to 15,000kb, about the same size as my game save file. But at some point, my game save file does not increase so fast anymore due to dungeons resetting; whereas the SKSE save file only gets bigger and bigger.

Deleting the file resets a lot of my mod MCM setups, it may even break the mods too but I'm not sure about this, never really continued playing after deleting the SKSE save file.

If you mean the skse save file, as far as I can see it stays constant over time.
Ihateeverybody Aug 14, 2019 @ 7:54am
Yes it does. Looking at my last game play (I have saves from the beginning) it started at around 10kb and was fluctiating from 105-110kb over multiple saves near when I quit that character (around 600 save files total)

Mine is typically ~30-180kb. One thing I'll note is that when using the XPMSE skeleton my cosaves would bloat drastically. I've since stopped using that mod.

Yes, it will, though not nearly to the extent that the regular save file does. Also, the size of the file is heavily dependent upon the number of mods you have that utilize SKSE.

Did you uncheck the options to apply effects to all NPCs? Also, in top left of MCM menu, believe there is a box to disable cloaking, which will also decrease the file size.

At OP - if your SKSE file is that large, there is a serious problem, most likely a poorly designed mod. Even with 1100 plugins (and 1500+ mods), my SKSE file is only about 1000 to 1100 kb.

No, never knew to try. I've since found XPMSE is simply unnecessary for me, pretty as it looks, but it is good to know there may be a way to mitigate that cosave disaster.

My last 100+ save with XPMSE was around 12mb. The only mod I have found that makes it get that large is XPMSE. Otherwise its usually around 100kb, but it does grow over time.

That might be why. I use XPMSE. But what exactly is that cloaking? I never knew what it is.

I use a bunch of mods, it's probably impossible to figure out which one it is. But since I've been using XPMSE for very long time, it is possibly that one. Either that or iNeed, because I found a problem with Wet and Cold by isoku and I stopped using that mod ever since.

Cloaking is a process by which the mod moves equiped weapons into the specified locations that the mod is configured for. So lets look at an example.

You can have 1 h sword on your hip (default), on your back and also I think differently on the hip. That is fine, only you have it that way and every other NPC with equipped weapons will be default. If you have the cloaking enabled and only your style selected (the three left options.) everyone will match your style. If you have the style all selected (the three right) options) (and here is where I can be mistaken) it will randomly assign one of the styles to an NPC. That's where the bloat comes in because now it needs to record all this info per NPC affected.

I usually disable cloak while still in the Live Another Life Cell, and disable Style all settings.

I see. I'll give that a try. Just a question: are the "styles" for dead npcs wiped as well or the SKSE file remembers them all? So, does the file save that bandit leader's style after I killed him in a bounty quest? Or if I killed Cicero, does his settings get deleted?

It is definately not iNeed or Wet and Cold. I have been using both of those for much longer than I was ever using XPMSE and the co save bloat only occured when I started using XPMSE.

Okay so the update is, I've disabled Style Cloak Spell, and the SKSE file is now down to 244kb (from 253kb). My Save 3 is 45kb, and currently I'm on Save 15.

I'll update more as I play, don't have much time today...

If anyone has any idea to how to reduce the save bloating, mostly from popular mods, that would be great. My main mods are (not in this order):

USLEEP
XPMSE (although I'm not sure if I can live without it, because I use daggers a lot and having the default dagger clipping through my thigh is just immersion breaking)
iNeed
Hunterborn
FNIS
Dual Sheath Redux
Campfire
WAFR
CCOR
VioLens
Inigo
Alternate Start (LAL)
Better Magic
Expensive Transports
SkyUI
Purity (weather mod)
The Choice is Yours
Timing is Everything
Stealth Skills Rebalanced
Trade and Barter
UNP (or CBBE, whichever really, just need something)
Better Males (same deal, just need something)
Wiseman's Fixes (all 3 of them: Critter, Flora and Trap Fixes)
Traps Make Noise - More Dangerous Traps
Bounty Gold
Crime Bounty Decay
Higher Bounties
Extended Encounters (yeah, I still have it)
Run For Your Lives
(and their requirements but they're pretty much all listed here)

If any of these mods cause bloating, please tell me, cheers.

By the way, I don't use Quicksaves nor Autosaves, I only use manual saves and I do it in enclosed areas like inns and dungeons.

I also have no ENB. I never figured out how to make it work...

[Edit]: Couldn't resist testing it out so... I basically did a quest, explored parts of Hjaalmarch and Haafingar holds, and the SKSE file is still 244 kb (aside from when I saved outdoors, it's 245 kb, 1 kb difference, not a huge deal). It looks like I'll replay this playthrough, since I only just started. (And I just uninstalled a mod that I thought was uninstalled before, oops.)

Thanks for the help, guys. Re: Wet and Cold, I had some issues with it before, mostly jamming my animation when I'm mining. After I uninstalled it, I never had a problem ever again...

Sorry to necro but since I was the OP, I suppose I might be an exception to the rule...

It worked, and I haven't had other problems so far so, thanks guys, for the help. :)
