Soul Trap problems
Okay, I recently enchanted a Dragonbone Bow with Chaos Damage and Fiery Soul Trap, and despite one-shotting several Imperials and having an empty Black Star, I have not trapped any of their souls. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix this, or what's causing the problem?

Empty charge on the enchantment? Mod problems? I'm sure somebody more well versed in technical troubleshooting would be able to help more.

The bow is charged, and I'm running vanilla Skyrim long enough to get all the achievements
not to burst you vanilla bubble but (now follow my logic here and the fact that i have proof) that there is a mod that allows for you to have mods and still get achievements:

If you are not using the Unofficial Patch, there is a vanilla bug that allows the Black Star to collect any souls, not just Black Souls. Thus, if you killed anything else before killing those possessing Black souls, the Black Star may have been already filled, thus preventing it from capturing a Black soul.

The Unofficial Patch fixed this (along with thousands of other bugs, as well).

i do use the USSEP but what constitues a black soul i mean not a wolf or a draugre but what does the game mean when it says it needs something that has a black soul?

Black Souls are those that and I use the term loosely as it could start several arguments "Free Will". Since Daedra count as Black Souls... Hence the argument.

In reality its just a thing in the game engine and settings. Humanoid types (Falmer are excluded from this and treated as beasts) vs Beasts. Beasts are not black Souls. Dragons are not beasts or Humanoid and have a different Soul System.

Edit: Let me simplify it further. Humans. Humans have black souls. If it's a Human (or Mer or Khajit or Argonian) (ok not as simplified). Funny story, Pre-Morrowind games, Orcs were not treated as Mer so were considered beast. But then, I don't think Black Soul Gems were in Daggerfall. I cannot remember how the game did it. Think it was strictly Petty-Grand.

so according to that and the game logic if i have an empty black soul gem and i make your everyday bandit bleed enough till he/she dies it would fill the black soul gem? ok gotcha stock up on those and leave me to alienate all of skyrim ♥♥♥♥ the war and the dragons i need those gems full of the lot of them thanks mr. howard!

for whatever reason the blackstar will think it has a soul in it and does not , drop it on the ground will usally fix it so you can put a soul in it

If you have any black souls on you that are empty the game will fill those first before it fill the Black Star.

Other than that i dont know, are you killing humans? EDIT: I guess Imperials count as humans for some people.

Hmm, seems like most of you are not reading the full note. I have empty soul gems and I have been killing my targets with one shot, yet the gems aren't being filled

all you mention is the Black Star not any other soul gems that you are just now mentioning info like that would have been useful to us earlier

While I don't know for certain, my guess is that you're killing them before the enchant goes off. It may even be that the Fiery part of the Fiery Soul Trap goes off first and is killing the mobs, or maybe the Chaos Enchant if the order is Chaos + Fiery and not Fiery + Chaos. Try fighting something harder than a dinky little Imperial Soldier and see if it still happens.
