Dawn Breaker And Other Crap
Just finished Meridia's Quest where I spread her light through her temple and burned through most of my healing potions fighting off a horde of undead followers and the chief bad guy. My reward is a blinking piece of tin foil called Dawn Breaker. I've already made better swords of my own, and even after I improved it with a piece of ebony, my sword is better. My sword does 24 points fire damage; Dawn Breaker only does 10.

My sword blade does over 40 points of damage. Dawn Breaker does around 30. If this is the gift of some wierdo goddess, it's no wonder the gods are falling out of favor with the masses. I make better weapons than the gods. Cheap skate gods. I want my healing potions back. You keep your lousy sword.

Meridia's quest is a lower level quest, intended for level 13-16. Dawnbreaker isnt much good anyways. Its too easy to lose important items with the explosions.

The crowning insult is I can't even pawn it. I've been to two weapon dealers, and neither of them would touch it. It didn't even come up on the list of stuff I could sell. Cheap, blinking gods.

Dawnbreaker's base damage is 12, on par with a glass sword. But it adds in 10 fire damage and the chance for any undead targets to explode, killing or turning any other undead nearby. Although this can send items flying.

There are mods out there to improve Daedric artifacts. More damage, unlimited/more powerful enchantments and so on. Daedric artifacts were definitely more powerful in previous games. But with smithing and such, weapons and armor have lost their edge (no pun intended) in Skyrim.

Hmm, try a mage merchant. Enchanted stuff is more their forte.

At least it's not a leveled item. :steamhappy:

Haha, yep. My bow has 555 base damage. I'm like "yeah... I'll take it. Thanks. Wanna have this ebony warhammer that I found inside your own temple? It does 5x more damage than your butter knife". I keep such stuff at home. No point in selling it, I own Skyrim in it's gold worth. So... Nice trophy. To one day look through it all and remember good old days of tomb raiding. ^__^

Zim's Immersive Artifacts is an amazing mod for fixing stupid things like this; the quests are harder, and Dawn Breaker in particular was able to last me until about level 27ish doing around a base of 54 damage (including enchantment).

Yeah, Meridia's quest is quite infamous. Its far too difficult for the level when you get the quest (level 10, UESP recommends you do this at level 24). And the reward, honestly, isn't all that great. Then again, most of the daedric artifacts aren't really worth using. Aside for the ones with unique effects you can't replicate (azura's star, savior's hide, ring of hircine, mehrune's razor, ogham infinium, and of course spellbreaker). The only one with a non-unique effect that really stands out at all is Volendrung, and that's just because the thing has one of the highest DPSs in the entire game (only beaten out by a daedric greatsword, and the dragonbone greatsword and greataxe), and you can do that quest long before you get access to these weapons. The thing also has an absorb stamina enchantment on it, which is great for making power attacks, even if its not the best enchantment in the world. Either way, its powerful enough to make a viable end-game weapon.

If all this really bothers you, there ARE mods out there that buff the artifacts in this game, including the daedric artifacts.

Honestly, probably the reason the artifacts in this game are all so weak is because, otherwise, there would be no point in getting other gear; everyone would just be decking themselves out in daedric weapons and armor otherwise. And seeing mods that buff the artifacts, its pretty easy to see why they were made as weak as they are. If you make them the best items in the game, guess what? People are going to only be using them, because doing their quests takes far less time and effort than grinding your smithing and enchanting. Yeah, you can make more powerful stuff yourself, but you have to do a lot more work for it.

Gasp, player crafted and enchanted weapons are better than a sword from a low level quest? This is an outrage!

based on what i've i would see it is simply the righteous nature of the game....

I feel like this is a more classically RPG result. You don't generally make a blade to slay the evil Voransulak, you find the ancient Spear of Sorgor forged long ago by a way better weaponsmith than you could ever hope to be.

Anyhow, OP clearly puts more effort into the crafting of items than I ever have, since I pretty much never get around to making weapons better than artifacts because I'm lazy and have a bad soul gem supply.

That I do. I just acquired one of the few decent rewards in the game, the Shield of Solitude. I already disenchanted it. Now all I have to do is get my enchanting ability up to 100. The shield gives a second form of resist magic--higher than the normal one. It makes it possible to double enchant rings, necklaces, and shields with double antimagic protection. Finally we have the mans to gain nearly complete protection against the vampire life drain attack. Then we can shove a dragon bone sword down their blood sucking throats. Sorry, but dragons don't tick me off nearly as much as blood suckers. I've gotten very good at killing them from a distance--with sneak arrow shots doing 3 times normal damage. That's good, but bashing them to death up close and personal beats everything.

Once you get this mages are no more a problem. I think in early game mages with ice are the most dangerous opponents (exept dragons, but only until you have dragonfall, then every dragon is a joke) for any one who goes meele. If you have enough resistance mage do not any dmg.

All the Daedric weapons are terrible. In Skyrim there is no point in using anything but what you craft your self. Besides unenchanted gear is the best you can use IMO. Elemental Fury shout just makes all weapons (except crossbows, you can enchant those) so much better than what any Enchant can do to them.

What's the damage output when it's upgraded to Legendary?

Add to that your typical perks.
