Waterwalking -- is it ever necessary?
Is there any location or story point in the game where you actually NEED to do waterwalking?

I have collected Ahzidal's Boots of Waterwalking and 3 potions of Waterwalking, but, so far, have not found any actual reason to use them.

Getting back into Skyrim after a 3 year absence. I cannot remember if waterwalking is ever important in the game. I find myself just putting on my necklace of waterbreathing and just swim when necessary.

Not really. It's just there. I mean if an enemy is over powering you. Just go walk on water. Away from them.

It helps one to fry Slaughterfish from right on top of the water's surface.

The only place it has ever been useful for me is in the boss battle in "The Final Descent" where that giant pool is in the way.

It's never that useful, it's just there.

Thanks, Getting tired of carrying around that extra junk cluttering my inventory.

I don't suppose waterwalking can be used to pass over the "toxic black goo" in Apocraphra without taking damage?

It can.

As a melee it's invaluable to fight Zahkriisos in Dragonborn, especially to land a few blows while he's waking up, otherwise the bastard would just levitate above water and spam spells at yo face.

I never use waterwalking but man was I happy to carry 1 or 2 potions of waterwalking for this guy

If you play with Frostfall it comes in very handy

I never used it other than one time when someone said you could walk over the Apochrypa water. Tried that and took damage. Never used before or after again.

They're really nice boots to have if you are playing a survival style game (Frostfall, no fast travel). They're useful around Solsteim, for one. And they're nice to have when taking the southern route from Winterhold, so you don't have to go through Windhelm every time.

I like having them, but that's because they're useful to my particular play style. If I was playing a "regular game" (fast travel, no Frostfall) I'd probably find them pretty pointless.

Game wasn't really built with it in mind. But because of silliness, if you fall from a high height and happen to hit even shallow water with waterwalking boots, you don't take damage.
You also jump a bit higher when waterwalking, and it is fun to use in general.

water walking has been in since Morrowind at least and easy to program there no reason to not have it in the game and lore wise, little fun, etc... reason to have it. That simple.

Game mechanically does it have a trully great use or purpose?-> Not even a bit I played thousands of hours and I don't think I ever used it more then once or twice (other then suppose the mentioned mod then might be helpful).

I use Frostfall, and getting into the drink isn't the greatest idea. With waterwalking, I can stay nice and dry, and alive.
