It currently says the mods contain the same files even though they are different mods.

have you checked your mod folder to see if you have any duplicates?

Some mods do have the same files as SMIM, like Noble Skyrim has alternate smim textures that overwrite the original smim textures for example.

I was thinking that too, but as I have not installed SMIM yet but i knew a bit about it I did not think that was right. Thanks!

Lots of mods overwrite each other. You need to be more clear on what is being overwritten... a mesh, a texture, an esp, a script.

Well, maybe vivid weathers needed to change a texture provided by smim, or maybe it needed to change a smim mesh in some way. Some of my smim meshes are being overwritten by ELFX meshes, some of my smim textures are being overwritten by Noble Skyirm textures for example.

1. Do these mods all do the same thing i.e. improve the same game meshes?
2. Are these loose files? If so, by what logic are you expecting the filenames to be different?

The game looks for a specific filename for a specific mesh. If multiple mods have that same filename for ANY mesh - chair01.nif, for example, whether one mod uses that name for the vanilla chair01.nif or not - then that's all the game looks for. It doesn't go by which one you like more, or which one is objectively "better", or any other criteria than the name.

If you want to use multiple mods that do the same thing, you will have to open them and ensure the assets all have different names, and their loose files will have to be renamed to match how you renamed them in the mod.

So, taking our chair01.nif example, and you have SMIM, Better Furniture (sample name), Improved Furniture (sample name), and Immersive Furniture (sample name), then you would have to pick which one will overwrite the vanilla file and be named chair01.nif.
Then, you would have to open Better Furniture and rename that specific chair to BetterFurnitureChair01.nif, and rename its loose file to BetterFurnitureChair01.nif to use them both. Then you'd do the same for Improved Furniture, and Immersive Furniture.

However, that is going to present another problem, because all mods will put those chairs in the same places throughout the game. So then, you will have to go into every cell where chair01.nif is used (in each mod) and either remove it or relocate it in the cell.

Or you could, y'know, just not use multiple mods that do the same thing.

Yes, mods do conflict with one another and overwrite each other. That's modding. Your job is to sort them into a load order using things like LOOT or reading the mod authors description page on where to place mods in the load order so that your game plays as it should. You might need to download a patch so 2 mods will work together, again mod authors page usually has info.

I've never used Vortex so can't help you on that, but I'm sure someone will let u know how to sort your mods in the right order. Gopher on Youtube has a few videos on using Vortex so maybe check them out.

Generally, install SMIM as one of your first mods, then let everything else overwrite it.
