The game does not keep a record of what the last stone you activated was.
It's like Twice born star set in ESO where you can have 2 mundus stones activated at once but here in Skyrim its supposed to retain the previous stone before you grab another if you have it equipped
I switched between the stones at least 6 times
Odd, should have retained it make sure your looking at your effects it doesn't show it on the crown itself, or if you notice unequip and equip the crown and it'll say lost (stone) gained (stone) in top left
did you looked for "aetherial crown" in the active effects or for the name of your standing stone (should display the latter).
If you happen to want the Lover stone on the crown (15% on all skill learning), then you should always remove the crown before sleeping. The effect get's cancelled by (well) rested bonus. Will stack if you remove before sleep and then re equip.
if so post your load order..
1) With an illegitimately-gained version of the Crown
2) If you try to use a legitimate version without saving, exiting and reloading before trying to use it.
Something about the save-and-exit process is necessary for the Crown's perk-and-script to work properly.
