Well, the dawnguard quest is childishly silly
Warning: SPOILERS AHEAD

I have started a new game on the special edition as a female orc. Soon I decided to go for the dawnguard quest and I can't believe how superficial the storyline is. First of all, I started the quest by going to fort Dawnguard AS A VAMPIRE and there was no consequence whatsoever - I was assigned the first misssion to go to Dimhollow Crypt without any trouble. After that, I decided to turn Serana in and went back to fort Dawnguard telling Isran that she is a vampire. There was not even an option to tell about the Elder Scroll! As it turns out, Isran wants me, a complete stranger, to just go ahead and let her go so long as I don't break my "cover", even though she is carrying an Elder Scroll (and even though I myself am a vampire)... So I go to Volkihar Castle and there her father just randomly offers me the power of vampiric immortality and to transform into a vampiric lord when none of his servants and family can do it. Again, me, a complete stranger. No interesting story whatsoever, it seems like something written for half a day with no detail and aimed at 8-years-olds to play. Also Serana is so annoying I honestly can't wait to finish this quest, reminded me how I got bored the first time I played it.

makes as much "sense" as dragons and shouts. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy or not.

Then use spoiler tags <rolleyes>
How did you become a vampire? Console or mods? It appears as though the game is not recognizing you as a vampire. That is why everyone is ignoring your physical state.

Yes, the story line is weak. And yes again, Serana is the most annoying thing in the whole game. I try to finish Dawnguard as early in the game as possible, just to get rid of her.

However, I just installed a new Serana mod that shuts her up and changes her appearance. I can also give her different gear. Coupled with Amazing Follower Tweaks, I can leave her at home indefinitely, too.

Much better now.

It's easy enough to shut Serana up but having her " forced " on me is what irks me the most.

To shut her up I changed the ENAM response flag reset timer from 0 hours ( well done Bugsoft ) to 24 hours on her " Yes, What did you need? " topic using SSExEdit. I just wish I was clever enough to get rid of her entirely after having rescued her, though... lol
Its funny how most of the things OP is mentioning are the same things Im thinking the first few seconds after each quest is given, then you just shake your head and all those silly logical and rational questions just go away and you go back to playing, but I agree 100%. But then again, we're talking Bethesda here, not exactly award winning story tellers.
I get really annoyed at the persistence of those damned Vampires. Last game I had to go to Dawnstar THREE times to kill the same one posing as an advisor. So, is the Jarl just plain dumb or is the whole Dawnguard quest and radiant quests plain dumb. For me it's the latter.

Next toon I'm going to edit these two Globals:

DLC1VQMinLevel to lvl 100
DLC1VQMinLevelVampireAttacks to lvl 98

and just enjoy " Lost to the Ages " without all that reforming the Dawnguard nonsense :D

If you reject Harkon's gift and return to the Dawnguard then you can tell about the scroll. You're not supposed to go back to Fort DG after rescuing Serana, which is why there was no option to do those things.

Harkan offers you the gift because you brought back vital pieces to his plot and he wants to use you for his goals. Stranger or not, he sees the value in you.

Serana and Valerica can transform into lord form by lore. It is not shown in vanilla game though. But with Amazing Follower Tweaks or any similar mod you can see she can transform.
There is as always a fundamental divide between aspirations and expectations. Ultimately there is a limit as far as what any development team is capable of accomplishing. The experience that the original poster seeks is more in line with a traditional linear experience, and even in so far as that is concerned abbreviation is going to be encountered. It is assumed that in any roleplaying game that the player is going to fill in certain elements for themselves.

The development team cannot very well give you a dozen or so hours of character development, and deep rewarding interactions with the characters in which to establish some kind of affection. You need to imagine that this interaction has taken place as with any movie, television show, or book. You are only seeing the highlights, or the moments where important things happen. The entire point of games such as these is that they provide the developer gives you the tools, but it is you who must build up the story within your own head.

You have to make the experience grander then what the developers could give you, because the development team only has so much time, resources, and most importantly bandwidth. Frankly we are talking about a team effort. You need to meet them in the middle by using a little actual imagination on your part.

I have always imagined that it took the two of you quite some time to bring her home through a dangerous land. So why wouldn't he be terribly impressed by what you were capable of doing. It may only take five or six minutes in game, but you should really treat it as if things took a great deal longer.

Anyway I always felt that dawnguard was one of the better expansions. Though the vampires are still fairly lackluster, mechanically speaking. The race just isn't as fun to play as it ought to be. It has too many disadvantages, and not enough advantages.

And why not? The DG sent you there to investigate so it makes sense to bring her back to the fort instead of to her home, at that point you already knew she was a vampire anyways. The game does expect players to do this, hence Serana refuses to enter, but there could have been more choices and maybe branch out a side quest.

Ditto. I found her to be quite annoying, and having her forced on me a few times for no apparent story reason was unacceptable. For example, why the hell do I have to escort her home after I first rescue her? Is she not able to take care of herself?

The best branch would have been to kill her the moment she admits she's a Vampire and take the scroll from her corpse. It's the Moth Priest who's key to the whole sheebang :D

True, the Moth Priest's knowledge is all that was needed. You of course still would need the last scroll, and to get the Blood scroll you'd just put Serana's blood into a vial, take it to with you to the back entrance of Castle Volkihar and get to the Soul Cairn all on your own. That would have made for a much better story. You get to take out Serana and Valerica and still finish off the rest of the Volkihar Vampires.

Maybe she didn't know where she was?
What exactly would killing Serana do ingame wise? You might think she's anoying which is fine, but to a Dragonborn who's never experienced these events before they need her help with all of this. As for the killing her once you find out she's a vampire...not cool, really. Not all vampires are monsters, after all. If she wanted you dead, she would've killed you withput talking to you. That seems...rather prejudice to me, killing someone because people like them have done awful things *Shrugs*
