Talking to certain NPC´s causes game to CTD
I have moded game and I started again recently. Now whenever I talk to trader in Riverwood game instantly crashes to desktop (might also be other NPC didnt tried others but Alvor yet - who was fine) and no error or something like that happens. Is it a mod problem?? Or is it caused by most recent patch??

I recently had this problem on Solstheim, in the Dragonborn DLC. And since the last patch, i can't even change of race in character creation menu. If you use mod changing NPC appearances, that might be the cause.

I am using WICO character overhaul for character enhancement. And mod list total is around 110 entries. Mostly visual stuff. It worked fine before...

if you get CTD due to mod if it use OLD bsa format it will create a crash look so bsa package is the version for SkyrimSE since its version is newer
it must be package with archiev2.exe from creation kit skyrim special edition its incldued in that version!

The game will crash directly on startup if you use bsa from original Skyrim.

not all listed there are actually packaged with the right Archive.exe
skyrim package version is 1.6 oldrim
Skyrim special edition uses 2.0.0.0
simply put uses diffrent file list format and has some better support for 64 bit
that why if mod after loot sorting and right placement still cauases crash its cause due to wrong package format of 1.6 and not 2.0 format!

remove settings and resetup yoru settings and clean savefile form corrupt settings
ported save allways has CTD
new version in Skyrim mostly tend to cause settings corrruption if use old settings from befor patch 1.2 some mods settings can corrupt save files settings as well

after each patch be aware old safe files can be corrupted due to patch changes!
the more mods you have the more sensitive it gets for patch changes!

the fewer mods you use the higher the chances of not being affacted with CTD

if a SkyrimSE patch is released you must get 1.3 version of all mods to have them compatible.

due to client changes what will affact mod files!

those patches allways will have some effect on mods and you will get for all mods pretty much updated version when ever they release a patch for skyrim!

well that certainly is stupid... getting corrupt saves with possibly tens of hours of game time just bcz of some bugfix.

its stupid yes, but normal can try save clean, but still high chance for CTD

to remove CTD need start NEW GAME when new patch released! only way to have system work properly!

reason static save data and static settings and references and even some dynamic reference that become outdated after patch and then just point to a random point in your ram what is the reason for CTD to begin with!

it simply befor patch proper vaule(0) after patch some vaules can change to &%¤##B&% or something like that and thats why you get CTD!

sadly yes

as said the reason is a programming and hardware machine based complex problam what creates that probalm in the first place, has to do how C and most programming languages store and manage program safe data and how they dynamicaly written to load and read that data.

How many mods do you have that add items/weapons/armor to the game? I have had CTDs in the past (on oldrim) when talking to general goods vendors due to an excessive amount of mod-added items. If the list of available things to be sold reaches a certain amount, the game sometimes has trouble processing it.

Check belethor, see if you CTD with him as well. Also, if you can post your mod list, I might be able to help pinpoint a trouble mod. (Need to be posted here though, I can't do links).
