I have notice this to be more true with SE. Lydia also is not aware of enemys coming up behind her most of the time. It also use to be that if you didn't give her arrows, she would not draw her bow. SE has defantly changed the way she fights. As for changing her ways, it seams if you give her two handed swords she seems to use them more.
I agree. She has a bad habit of getting in the way if she decides to switch to melee. You're better off having her stay behind you using her bow.
